Severe storms are expected across the region Wednesday afternoon and evening. While storms are most likely to form along and slightly ahead of an advancing cold front marching out of central MN in the afternoon, there is a low chance (20-30%) for storms to form further ahead of this front early in the afternoon. Regardless of where they form, storms will quickly become severe with large hail (2+") likely with more isolated storms. As the storms merge into a line later in the afternoon, the threat shifts to damaging winds (75+ mph). Tornadoes are possible throughout the afternoon and evening, a few of which could become strong (EF2+). The line of storms moves east of the region by late in the evening. Now is the time to ensure your severe weather shelter is accessible, that you can receive weather warnings, and possibly adjust any plans, especially if they are outdoors.

5/17 6:00AM - Scattered severe storms remain possible (2/5) tonight and Monday night for much of the local area.
Higher probability for severe storms today initially forming west of the local area through the afternoon and evening, shifting east into the nighttime hours. A weakening trend as storms shift east limits local confidence for storm severity, highest from northeast Iowa into southeast Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin primarily for damaging winds.
Similar situation for Monday as higher confidence for storm formation remains southwest of the local area, shifting northeast through the evening and nighttime hours primarily threatening the local area with damaging winds. Low probability (15%) for storms forming over the area through Monday afternoon and evening would increase local severe threat to include large hail and tornadoes. Monitor forecasts and prepare now for potential severe weather impacts.

Two rounds of showers and storms move through the region Sunday, one in the morning and one overnight. Strong to severe storms are possible during the second round Sunday night with the main hazards being damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain. There is some uncertainty with how the morning round influences the evening, so stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings if severe weather threatens your area!
