Huge thank to supporter Theresa Larson for her (very quick!) action in donating 120 boxes of crayola crayons - which is 2,880 crayons!

When asked about her motivation for donating she stated “No child should have to go without crayola crayons!”

A great opportunity to receive guidance for legal issues.

Are you representing yourself in court? Are you unsure of your options? Have questions about the legal system? Stop by the lobby to talk to a fellow from the Illinois JusticeCorps and get answers! Saturdays, 11:00 AM-2:00 PM, July 11, 18, and 25.

JusticeCorps fellows can help you start or respond to a court case, figure out your next steps, file your forms, and prepare for court. They provide general legal information and can direct you to helpful resources to respond to any legal problems you face.

Some of the areas they can help with include:

Divorce and Family
Guardianship
Housing (including evictions and foreclosures)
Small Claims
Restraining Orders
Sealing and Expunging records
Name Changes

After joining our domestic violence classes, a survivor wrote poetry to move forward through her grief. Poetry and authors name shared with permission.

Trapped in a Dark, Cold Love

I was caught in a love that turned to ice,
dark corners where warmth used to be.
His hands spoke in silence,
his words cut colder than winter.

I reached for light,
but the door was locked from the inside.
Love became a trap,
and I learned how to survive in the dark.

But I’m still here.
Still breathing.
Still learning the way out.

When he’s not around, his hands are still covering my mouth.
They’re cold like ice as I’m trying to get out.
My headspace is weak,
my eyes wet as they start to leak.

I can’t get out, no matter what he does.
I’m alone, scared, and angry too.
My brain shouts, “You dumb, just be through.”
I ask myself, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

The hits, the bruising that he does,
ain’t nothing like what I’m mentally putting myself through.
I’m stuck, not free.
I’m alone, but this cold love won’t let me be free.

The room is dark, so dark I can’t see,
no matter what he does to me.
The whispers in his voice are truly my enemy,
They’re gentle and fresh is what makes me weak.
