Galesburg Police Department Public Information:

🚲⚡ New Illinois Micromobility Law Takes Effect July 1, 2026

Illinois has enacted Senate Bill 3484 (SB 3484), establishing statewide classifications and operating standards for micromobility devices, including:

• E-Bikes
• E-Unicycles
• E-Scooters
• Electric Bicycles
• Electric Motor Bikes (E-Motos)

Beginning July 1, 2026, Illinois will implement uniform rules and classifications for these devices, helping create consistent regulations across the state. The law also includes age requirements and operational restrictions for certain devices. High-speed micromobility devices capable of exceeding 28 mph will be subject to additional regulations and operating limitations.

Looking ahead, January 1, 2027, riders of certain high-speed e-bikes and e-motos capable of traveling more than 28 mph will be required to have a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, title, and insurance. Additional age requirements will also apply.

The goal of this legislation is to improve safety for riders, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists while providing clear, consistent rules throughout Illinois.

📖 Before you ride, know the rules. The Illinois Secretary of State's "Know the Rules" resource provides an excellent overview of the new law and what it means for riders and parents.

Please take a few minutes to review the new requirements and ensure you are operating your device safely and legally.

Ride Safe. Ride Smart. Ride Responsibly.

Galesburg Police Department begins Fourth of July traffic safety campaign

Galesburg, IL – Galesburg P.D. announced plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The safety campaign will run from June 19 through July 6 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Deputy Chief Sage. “It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances. Our officers will be working diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone is buckled up.”
Galesburg P.D. will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments for the statewide effort.

To celebrate safely, designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive impaired.

Other important tips include:

• Give your designated driver your keys before you go out.
• If you are impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or any other drug, call a taxi, take mass transit, use a ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
• Promptly report impaired drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.
• Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. Not only is it the law, but it’s also your best defense against an impaired driver.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns are made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The enforcement efforts are complemented by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which emphasizes the serious consequences of impaired driving and other unsafe driving behaviors.

🚨 ** Weather- Information**🚨

Due to environmental temperature changes, condensation is occurring and may appear as steam rising from rooftops and around residences throughout the area.

We have received multiple 911 calls regarding this. There is no fire associated with these reports.

Please do not call 911 unless you observe actual smoke, smell smoke. see visible flames, or other signs of an emergency. This natural weather-related phenomenon can resemble smoke but does not indicate a fire.

Thank you for helping keep emergency lines available for those who need them most. Continue to monitor for weather updates this evening.

🚨🌪️ Severe Weather Awareness: Know How Warning Sirens Work 🌪️🚨

We often hear concerns such as:

😨 "I can't hear the sirens when I'm inside my house."
😨 "What if the sirens don't wake me up during a tornado?"
😨 "I heard the sirens but there was not a tornado warning."

The truth is that outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors. They are not intended to be heard inside homes, structures, or vehicles, and they are not designed to wake you while you are sleeping.

Because of this, sirens should never be your primary or only source of severe weather warnings. Every household should have multiple ways to receive emergency notifications, especially during severe weather and overnight hours.

📱 Good News for Knox County Residents!

The Knox County Emergency Management Agency (KCEMA) has implemented IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert & Warning System) emergency alerts for residents.

✅ No sign-up required
✅ Emergency alerts sent automatically to phones in affected areas
✅ Alerts include a unique, high-pitched notification sound
✅ Followed by a message with details about the emergency situation

When severe weather threatens, make sure you have multiple ways to stay informed, including:

✔️ Wireless Emergency Alerts (IPAWS)
✔️ NOAA Weather Radio
✔️ Local media and weather apps
✔️ Trusted weather notification services

Being prepared and receiving warnings quickly can make all the difference during severe weather events. As a reminder, sirens can be activated for serious weather activity even when there is not a tornado warning.

Stay weather aware and stay safe, Galesburg! 🌩️🌪️

🚨***Sirens- Galesburg, IL***🚨

The sirens in Galesburg were activated due to potential for 80MPH winds with the current storm.

A bowing line segment tracking southeast out of Iowa this morning will bring a high risk for destructive straight line winds - 80-100 mph. The complex will track southeast around 60 mph. Besides widespread destructive winds, a few tornadoes will be possible as well. Central IL will be impacted between 8 am and noon.
