📌The Ledyard RTC stands behind our active and fallen law enforcement officers!

😢June 5th will forever be a sad day for me and every member of the Connecticut State Police!

35 years ago on this day at 0400 I got the most shocking and heartbreaking call I ever received in my 22 years as a Connecticut State Trooper. I was evening shift Sergeant at Troop K and just after midnight roll call I had sat down with one of the young guys in my platoon to discuss a few of his cases. He left to go out on patrol on the midnight shift and I went home to sleep. Around 4 A.M. I received that call from Paul Farley, one of the dispatchers at Troop K telling me that young Trooper I had just been talking to just a few hours ago had been murdered. He was ambushed and shot to death in the dark while doing a routine patrol check of a local gun shop in Windham. As I sat there on the side of my bed sobbing Carolyn asked me what had happened. I told her that a young Trooper whom I was just talking to was dead...killed by gunshots in an ambush. After a few minutes I told my wife that I had to get up and go back to the Troop. I was supposed to be on 3 days off but I could not stay home. I went in to the Troop to see if there was anything I could do to contribute to hunting down the Trooper's killer. As it turned out I stayed at the Troop for the next 3 days pretty much running it along with M/Sgt. Constantine because everyone else including the Troop Commanding Officer Lt. Witkin was out at the scene. A helluva lot of things got done over the next few days culminating in a massive funeral for this young Trooper. R.I.P. Trooper Russell A. Bagshaw, Badge number 534....you will never be forgotten.
