The USDA has released its 2015 Food Security Report. Statistics show a decrease in food insecurity in Connecticut and the nation as a whole. In a press release, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack applauded the strides the nation has made, stating that “today's report just underscores that America is greatest when everyone gets a fair shot.” We echo that sentiment and thank all of those working in our community to reduce food insecurity.

The University of Connecticut is seeking two-parent families with children ages 3-5 in food insecure households to take part in their food research study. The study is being conducted to see if mothers and fathers within a household respond, react, and cope differently with food insecurity. The study will be used to inform about food insecurity within families in order to help with programs, policy, outreach, and support for families experiencing food insecurity. Each parent will be asked to participate in a 60-90 minute video-taped interview as a part of the study and each parent will receive a $20 gift card as compensation. For more information, contact graduate research assistant Jaime Foster at [email protected] or the study's principal investigator Dr. Amy Mobley at [email protected]

The Office of Sustainability has been working with the New London Food Policy Council for 2 years on the Food Hub project. Brent Lo, senior fellow for the Food Policy Council says, “The goals that the NLCFPC is pursuing through the consideration of a food hub includes reducing the pressure on producers to find sales outlets and increasing the amount of local food that stays within the region, which in turn will strengthen the local food economy.” Check out this diagram to see all the ways buying local promotes sustainability!
