Today in Galena VFC History - September 15th.

1946 – Engine 1 mutual aid to Cecilton Vol. Fire Co on the building fire, John C. Martin Farm.

1974 – Rescue Box 30-5, Golts Caldwell Rd. – Engine 32 & Ambulance 37 on the MVC. IC – Chief Jack Dwyer.

1975 – Fire Box 30-2, Rt. 290 – Engine 32 & Brush 35 on the combine fire. IC – Assistant Chief Bill Briscoe.

1977 – The fire company ordered a 1977 Chevrolet C30/Pierce Rescue Truck.

1980 – Fire Box 30-11, Rt. 213 – Engine 31, Engine 32, Tanker 34 & Rescue 36 on the grain dryer fire. IC – Assistant Chief Joe Woodall.

1983 – The fire company held its first discussions of having a Dogwood Festival.

2000 – Haz-Mat Box 30-91, Sassafras River – Rescue Pumper 3 & Utility 3 on the fuel spill in the water. Mutual aid received from Cecilton, Community Fire Company Of Millington,Md & Kennedyville Volunteer Fire Company. IC – Chief John Dwyer.

2020 – Ambulance 3, Engine 3 & Tanker 3 mutual aid to Hacks Point Fire Company on the structure fire, Kitty Knight Blvd. Smyrna & Smyrna Ambulance transferred to Galena.

2021 – The fire company received 7 pallets of water from National Volunteer Fire Council. The water was distributed to other companies in the county.

2021 – The fire company was awarded $40,571.00 for new vehicle extrication tools.

1956 – Fire Box 30-1, Galena – Engine 2 (32) on the vehicle fire. IC – Assistant Chief John Duhamell.

1963 – Fire Box 30-13, one mile west of Galena – Engine 1 (31) & Engine 2 (32) on the chimney fire. IC – Chief Jack Dwyer.

1978 – Rescue Box 30-7, Rt. 313 – Engine 32 & Rescue 36 on the MVC. Mutual aid received from Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company. IC – Past Chief John Duhamell.

1996 – Rescue Box 30-80, Rt. 301 & 313. Engine 32 & Rescue 3 on the MVC with rescue. Mutual aid received from Community Fire Company Of Millington,Md. IC – Assistant Chief Ed Connolley.

1970 – Galena assisted Betterton Volunteer Fire Company with the old Betterton Elementary School control burning.

1998 – Rescue Box 30-13, Rt. 301 & 313 – Brush 3, Engine 32 & Rescue 3 on the MVC with medivac. Mutual aid received from Community Fire Company Of Millington,Md & Crumpton Volunteer Fire Department. IC – Deputy Chief John Dwyer.

2002 – Brush 3, Engine 3-1 & Tanker 3 mutual aid to Cecilton Vol. Fire Co on the field fire, Rt. 213 & Mill Lane.

2013 – Rescue Pumper 3 & Tanker 3 mutual aid to Cecilton on the boat fire with exposure, Knights Island Rd.

1960 – Local Box 30-1, Galena – Engine 2 (32) on the public service due to Hurricane Donna. Six basements pumped out.

1982 – Fire Box 30-18, Shorewood Rd. – Engine 31, Brush 35 & Rescue 36 on the tree fire. IC – Chief Jack Dwyer.

1983 – Engine 32, Tanker 34 & Rescue 36 mutual aid to Townsend Fire Company on the house fire, Caldwell Rd. Galena OIC – Chief Ed Connolley.

1987 – Rescue Boat 36B & Utility 39 mutual aid to Volunteer Fire Company #1 of Chesapeake City, Inc. on the water rescue, CD Canal. Galena OIC – Assistant Chief Jack Alfree.

1944 – Special meeting held to formulate plans for an Indoor Carnival – The carnival nights would be October 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th.

1944 – Fire Box 30-1, rear of Sweet Shope – Engine 1 on the trash fire.

1966 – Fire Box 30-7, Quinn Rd. – Engine 32 on the log loader fire. Two Firefighters, Rick Hanifee & Sam Johnson III, were injured when the fire truck they were riding on was hit. They were hit while stepping off the back step. IC – Assistant Chief John Duhamell.

1976 – Fire Box 30-2, Gregg Neck Rd. (Eisinger Construction Co.) – Engine 31, Engine 32 & Tanker 34 on the barn fire, total loss. IC – Chief Jack Dwyer.

1977 – Mutual aid to Kennedyville Volunteer Fire Company on hog pen fire, Rt. 213 Galena OIC – Chief Jack Dwyer.

1983 – Engine 31 & Brush 35 mutual aid to Cecilton Vol. Fire Co on a brush fire, Fredericktown. Galena OIC – Chief Ed Connolley.

1986 – Rescue Box 30-14, Rt. 213 – Engine 32, Ambulance 33, Rescue 36 & Ambulance 37 on the MVC. IC – Chief Jim Alfree.

1993 – Ambulance 37, Command 3, Engine 38 & Rescue 3 mutual aid to Cecilton Vol. Fire Co on the MVC, Rt. 213, north of the Sassafras River Bridge.

1993 – Ambulance 33, Engine 38 & Rescue 3 mutual aid to Community Fire Company Of Millington,Md on the MVC, Rt. 301 & 291.

2017 – Tower 3 mutual aid to Cecilton on the large outside fire, Grove Neck Rd.

It is with the deepest regret and sorrow that the Galena Volunteer Fire Company announces the passing of Associate Member Don Gears. Don was a dedicated member of our fire company who generously gave his time and support, working countless functions and events over the years. His friendship, commitment, and willingness to lend a helping hand will be greatly missed by all of us. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Don’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
