Community spirit, music and fun marked the official reopening of Tom Petty Park last Saturday. The renovated municipal park features improved lighting and new seating areas, shade canopies, pickleball courts, a multiuse trail, landscaping, a Bee City Gainesville pollinator garden and more. These improvements were funded by the voter-approved Wild Spaces and Public Spaces surtax.

Trail users have a new route to explore. The NE 31st Avenue Trail is now open along NE 31st Avenue between NE 15th Street and NE Waldo Road, providing safer connections to Unity Park, Flatwoods Conservation Area and other destinations along Waldo Road. The $1.5 million project is fully funded through the voter-approved Wild Spaces & Public Places (WSPP) surtax.

Two of Gainesville's oldest homes were among the projects recognized at the City of Gainesville's 2026 Historic Preservation Awards. Restoration work on properties built in 1858 and 1859 preserved examples of the city's architectural heritage, while preparing them for future generations.
