Guest Speaker: Mr. Tim Sicking, President & Owner of Quasar Energy Services
Speaker’s Presentation:

Tim updated the members on current energy conditions in North Texas and South Oklahoma. He also gave a wider view of the situation in our country and the world. The State of Texas is the undisputed leader in the US for energy production. Texas accounts for 40 percent of the total crude oil output in our country. Most of it is pumped from the Permian Basin in West Texas, using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies. What is lacking is the ability to refine the crude into the product we use. A majority of the refineries being used today were built in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The last US refinery built was in 1977. Texas crude is shipped to overseas refineries and once processed, returned to the US. China leads the world with the highest number of refineries. The profit margin for retail gas stations is substantial. There is a profit margin of 40 cents to 60 cents per gallon sold. Tim predicted the price of gas and diesel fuel along with the cost of fertilizer will continue to rise. The current uncertainty in the energy market is having a negative effect on the US economy.

Guest Speaker: Tamara Sieger- Emergency Management & Community Risk Specialist City of Gainesville
Speaker’s Presentation: Tamara has been in her current position with the City & Fire Dept since February of this year. Since taking on her new role, she has created a variety of programs & services to educate residents on safety and risk reduction. Her “Service Beyond the Sirens” program was created to introduce the many situations the Fire Dept responds to in addition to putting out fires. Tamara said all disasters start and end locally. Organizations such as various state programs and FEMA do not come into play until all local resources have exhausted. The Fire Dept has been awarded prestigious designations, including the Texas A&M Task Force One designation. The Gainesville Fire Dept was created in 1885. The Dept currently has 45 career personnel & seven administration personnel. Over the past 12 months they have conducted 1,800 inspections which resulted in 680 hazards being corrected.

Guest Speaker: Ashley Collett, Membership & Retention Manager for the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Speaker’s Presentation: Ashley provided a community update for the Gainesville Lions Club. For the period of 1/1/2026 -8/24/2026, there were 198,112 directory searches, 173,826-page hits and 1,737,945 search hits through the Chamber website specifically for our club. Ashley detailed the service provided by the Chamber vs other organizations such as the city or the Gainesville EDC. An important part of the chamber’s job is referrals to member businesses. Visibility, Connections and Advocacy. A “Behind the Scenes” typical Chamber week includes a variety of activities to visit and promote Chamber members. Ashley spoke about several upcoming events, and an addition of an afternoon connection opportunity for members. Receptionist Jennifer Cannon will be retiring early January 2027.

My Fellow Lions,
On June 18, 2007, the banks of Pecan Creek overflowed, causing significant property damage to the downtown Gainesville area. Our very own Lion Rod Tyler memorialized the event by painting a red line marking the flood water level on the side of the Bomber Bait building. How would the City respond to a similar catastrophic event today?

This week our speaker will be past district governor PDG Deb Lewis accompanied by her Mom, Evelyn Lewis. Both are members of the Denton Robson Ranch Lions Club.

Deb is an Elected Director of the Texas Lions Camp. Our club has been very active with the Lions Camp over the years. Deb will be telling us about the opportunities we have to serve once again.

Guest Speaker: Christina Reynolds with Lagniappe Sober House
Ms. Reynolds says that the Sober House is for men. It is a faith-based place for men
suffering from alcohol and drug abuse. The house has room for eight men. The residents fill
out an application to live there and a history is run on them. No violent offenders. They can
come from any place, not just Gainesville and the time there will average one year to one
and a half year. The house is secure with security cameras, throughout the house and
property. The residents pay a fee to live there and assist with cooking and cleaning chores.
They have periodic drug tests and if one comes back positive, they must leave the house.
While there, they must attend meetings and try to maintain jobs. They can get scholarships
to help them with special needs. They have a curfew and cannot smoke in the house or on
the front or back porches. They currently are in need of a privacy fence built around the
back yard and really need a shed to store items. Ms. Reynolds is hoping to open a sober
house for women and/or women with children, in the near future.

Guest Speaker: Lion Sean Bryan-First Vice District Governor

Speaker’s Presentation: 1st VDG Lion Sean undated the members on anticipated goals and projects for the coming year. District Governor (DG) Mike Lueckenhoff sees service projects & reporting of service as priorities. Another important aspect is to keep club members engaged as a way to retain current membership. Texas Lions Camp has closed its sessions for the summer. This year there were 4 two-week sessions. The last two were family sessions. There were a total of 1100 campers this season. The Texas Leadership Conference will be held in October on the campus of Temple College in Temple. Applications are currently being accepted. The Emerging Lions Leadership Institute is scheduled for Fe., 2027. Location to be decided. Specific to our club, over the past 3 years, our club’s membership dropped from 29 to 22 members. Last year our club logged 106 service hours and donated $154 to LCIF. Lion Sean ended his presentation with “Retain, Support, Service” as the goals for the year.
