Gainesville Police Aviation

Gainesville Police Aviation Gainesville Police Department has not operated an aviation unit since 2020. We operates 2 military surplus OH-58 helicopters.

The Aviation Unit provides air support to area law enforcement, fire, and other emergency agencies. JAU is staffed by 2 full time pilots,, and 1 full time mechanic. Back up flight officers and volunteer pilots assist in staffing the Aviation Unit. Your tax dollars are NOT funding the helicopters! Funding for the helicopters and maintenance comes from contraband seizure...meaning you can thank local drug dealers for the choppers!

Today, the JAU crew flew to Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office and presented Chief Deputy Manning with 3 aviation challenge coins - 1 for the sheriff and 1 for each family of the fallen deputies. We also presented them with patches from the unit and GPD.

We also had the honor of conducting the memorial flyover for their recent funeral.

We did this to honor the fallen and let Gilchrist County know we continue to support them.

Strangely enough...there aren’t any “fly-through” helicopter washes so we have to do it the old fashioned way by hand!
