𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐌 𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓: 𝐉𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐲 & 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬

Scammers are once again targeting residents with phone calls claiming they have missed jury duty or have an active arrest warrant. These callers may use the names and badge numbers of actual law enforcement officers and can even spoof caller ID numbers to make the call appear legitimate.

The scammers will demand immediate payment to avoid arrest, often requesting gift cards, prepaid cards, wire transfers, payment apps such as Venmo or Zelle, or cryptocurrency. They may also instruct you to stay on the phone, tell you not to hang up or contact anyone else, or even direct you to drive to your local police department.

Do not follow their instructions, send money, or provide personal information. If you are concerned that there may actually be an issue involving jury duty or a warrant, independently look up the phone number for your local court or law enforcement agency and contact them directly.

You can also report scams to the Federal Trade Commission or your local law enforcement agency’s non-emergency number.

Remember: No legitimate law enforcement agency will call you and demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up. Don’t let the scammers scare you into making a payment or giving up your personal information.

Last Saturday, August 28, the Gainesville Police Department hosted Operation Chomp Down, an effort focused on two important goals: educating our students about the dangers associated with drinking and identifying drivers who choose to drive impaired.

GPD was joined by the University of Florida Public Safety, Alachua County Sheriff, Alachua Police Department, High Springs Police Department, Alachua County Health Promotion and Wellness Coalition, UF Health Adult Injury Prevention, and Gator Dominos.

The operation ran from 9:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. During that time, assigned personnel conducted 108 traffic stops, issued 71 citations—including 38 for speeding—and issued 61 warnings. Officers also made two DUI arrests and, perhaps most importantly, had hundreds of educational contacts with students throughout the evening.

We appreciate all of our partners who helped make Operation Chomp Down a success. Keeping our community safe takes all of us, and sometimes the most important conversation we can have is simply reminding our students to make good decisions.

If you drink, don’t drive. Make a plan, get a ride, and get home safely.

University Avenue will be closed between NW 17th Street and Gale Lemerand Drive on Saturday, September 5th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. for the Florida Gators football game.

The closure will remain in effect up to 2 hours after the game ends to ensure pedestrian safety and smooth game day operations.

Additionally, post-game, SW 2nd Avenue from the O Dome to 34th Street is one way (westbound) and Gale Lemerand Drive from University Avenue to Archer Road is one way (southbound).

Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya has made the decision to suspend the Gainesville Police Department's use of automated license plate reader cameras that are currently mounted along city rights-of-way, commonly known as Flock cameras. The decision follows Monday’s announcement by Governor Ron DeSantis regarding the removal of license plate reader cameras from state rights-of-way.

“Automated license plate readers have unequivocally been one of our best public safety tools in recent years, and, because of this technology, we have solved countless crimes, including homicides, sexual assaults, recovered missing people, and brought to justice those who have harmed our community. While we believe that we have strong policies and safeguards in place governing the use of these cameras, and regularly inspect the system to ensure compliance, we recognize the unilateral wave of community concerns regarding privacy and individual rights,” Chief Moya said. “Our responsibility is to be good stewards of the community we serve and, above all, to maintain the public’s trust. After careful consideration, I believe suspending the use of these cameras is in the best interest of our community while we continue to monitor any potential legislative efforts at the state and federal level in the hope that it brings greater transparency regarding the use of this technology, and, for us here in Gainesville, to garner support from our community in its use.”

GPD recognizes that license plate reader technology has generated differing opinions within the community. The department remains committed to working collaboratively with residents and community stakeholders to address public safety concerns, while respecting individual rights and liberties.

Members of the community may continue to see license plate reader cameras on some roadways. However, effective today, Sept. 3, 2026, at 3 p.m., cameras operated by the Gainesville Police Department have been turned off and are no longer being utilized by GPD.

The suspension of the automated license plate reader cameras does not affect other investigative tools or technologies utilized by the Gainesville Police Department. The use of body worn camera technology continues to be an integral tool that helps GPD maintain a high degree of transparency, while enhancing the quality of cases brought forth by our police officers. We will continue to evaluate available resources and practices to ensure the department can effectively address crime and protect the Gainesville community.

Just before 9:00 p.m. last night, Gainesville Police officers conducted a traffic stop in the 1300 block of South Main Street for speeding.

The driver, identified as Joshua Bailey (01/03/1989), was found to be in possession of a bag containing a loaded Ta**us G2 9mm handgun, along with his wallet and identification. Officers also located numerous concealed edged weapons of various types, including a prison shank, as well as bear spray.

Further investigation determined that Bailey is a convicted felon. He was arrested and transported to the Alachua County Jail, where he was charged with Possession of a Fi***rm by a Convicted Felon.

This arrest serves as another reminder that routine traffic stops can uncover illegal activity and help keep our community safe.

It’s a new school year and a new opportunity to connect with and educate our UF students and the Gainesville community.

Tonight, beginning at 10 p.m., the Gainesville Police Department will partner with several law enforcement agencies and community organizations to provide alcohol awareness, safety information, and helpful resources to students and community members.

We will also be partnering with those same agencies to conduct a high visibility DUI enforcement campaign throughout the city.

Come out and visit us at 1700 W. University Avenue. We’ll have FREE pizza for those who stop by and participate!

Mental health co-responders are trained behavioral health clinicians who partner with law enforcement officers to respond together to calls involving mental health crises, emotional distress, or substance use.

The Gainesville Police Department currently has four co-responder teams, partnering with behavioral health clinicians from Meridian Healthcare. Together, they respond to community members in need and work to connect them with the appropriate resources, services, and support.

These partnerships allow us to better serve people experiencing a crisis and, when appropriate, connect them with help that can make a lasting difference.

We are proud of the work our officers and Meridian Healthcare clinicians do every day to support the Gainesville community.
