Today, three Americans join a group of fewer than 4,000 Medal of Honor Recipients.

Major James Capers, Jr., Colonel John Ripley, and Major Nicholas Dockery each answered a moment of extraordinary challenge with extraordinary action in service to others. Though separated by generations and different conflicts, their actions reflect the values of courage, commitment, and service that continue to inspire our nation.

We are honored to preserve and share their stories so future generations can learn from their example and recognize the potential for the extraordinary that exists within us all.

The history of Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day) dates back to 1865 in Texas, where the final enslaved people in America were declared free under the Emancipation Proclamation. Though its history is much older, it was declared an official federal holiday in 2021. DAV takes this holiday to reflect on the profound impact that Black veterans of the Civil War had and the sacrifices they made to make freedom a possibility for all Americans.

Deputy Secretary Paul Lawrence, Ph.D., joined Dr. Neil Evans, acting program executive director for VA’s Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office, to discuss why Michigan’s deployment of the Federal EHR on April 11 was such a success.

Dr. Lawrence emphasized the success is due to the people at every level of VA showing up not just to execute, but to find solutions.

“The Veterans in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Detroit, and Saginaw are now being served by a modern electronic health record, and behind that accomplishment is a team that didn’t wait to be told what to do. They leaned in. I saw it firsthand. That’s what right looks like. And I couldn’t be more proud of what this team accomplished,” stated Dr. Lawrence.
