Can you believe this ecosystem was on fire just last June? Conservationists and scientists at UF / IFAS Austin Cary Forest burn this area, called a sandhill forest, every two to five months. From the lush understory of the forest to the overstory dominated by longleaf pines, it’s hard to tell that this ecosystem is pyrogenic. That means it depends on fires to produce organisms. Many of the animals that call sandhill forests home are endangered. Examples of these are the gopher tortoise and the Red-cockaded woodpecker. In this photo, you can see how well this ecosystem is thriving, with only a charred stump as a clue to its maintenance. Photo and caption credit to AEC student Charlotte Yanes.
