Over the next few weeks Grassy Pond volunteer firefighters will be going door to door in our community asking you to sign a petition.
Signing this petition does not vote for a tax increase—it simply puts the question on the ballot so every voter in our community can decide for themselves.
The petition will allow a ballot question that will consider an additional 8mil property tax to support the Grassy Pond Volunteer Fire Dept. This will add about $8 per month on an average house.
This petition is the next step in a planning process the Fire Department began in 2005 to ensure the long term sustainability of our operations and the level of service we believe our community deserves. Unfortunately, significant increases in operating costs, capital equipment and facility needs mean the current level of service cannot be maintained without a funding increase, which is why we're asking you to support the Grassy Pond Volunteer Fire Dept by allowing the voters to decide.
We've served the community since 1978, and for the last 34 years the funding model has not evolved even as our community, service expectations, call volume, training, facility, equipment, and operating costs, have all grown significantly. So it's finally time to ask the people for additional support to help us meet those expectations and continue the current level of service by our dedicated volunteers.
We look forward to meeting with you as we walk through neighborhoods over the next few weeks. We hope you'll get to know a little more about the dedication of your volunteer firefighters and their commitment to doing all that they can to protect you, your family, and our community.
