First Steps to School Readiness in 1999, non-profit partnerships in the state's 46 counties have helped over half a million children prepare for school. These programs strengthen families, improve child health and well-being, increase child care quality and early education opportunities, and help children transition to kindergarten.

Summer is a great time for children to learn through outdoor play and exploration 💛 Spending time outside helps support physical development, encourages curiosity, and provides opportunities for children to build problem-solving and social skills. Whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, playing at the park, or exploring nature, everyday experiences can become valuable learning moments.

Here are a few ways to encourage outdoor learning:
• Explore nature together by observing plants, insects, and animals
• Encourage active play through running, jumping, and climbing
• Ask questions that spark curiosity and conversation

Problem-solving begins long before children enter school! Every time a child explores, experiments, or tries something new, they’re developing important thinking skills. Giving children opportunities to work through challenges helps build confidence, persistence, and independence.

Here are a few ways to encourage problem-solving:
• Allow children time to figure things out before stepping in
• Ask open-ended questions like “What do you think we should try next?”
• Provide opportunities for hands-on play and exploration
