Today was a solid day of training for our personnel. We had some great hands-on time sharpening our vehicle extrication skills, thanks to the folks at MES who came out to walk us through the latest techniques and equipment. It makes a world of difference having quality tools and real-world instruction to keep our personnel ready.

We couldn’t have pulled this off without a vehicle donated by HomeProFire, which gave us the perfect platform to practice those critical cuts and stabilization maneuvers. And thank you to Hurst Towing who will be hauling off the vehicle after we destroyed it.

A big thanks goes out to Mayor Jim Lowery and Councilman and Fire Chaplain Josh Bryant for stopping by to support the crew and show they’ve got our backs while we’re putting in the work.

🇺🇸 Honoring Our Heroes: Memorial Day Ceremony 🇺🇸

Today, members of Fultondale Fire & Rescue were deeply honored to stand alongside our community, Fultondale Police, Fultondale Public Works, City Council, and Mayor Jim Lowery at the North Jefferson Memorial Day Ceremony hosted at Fultondale Event Center.

It was a profound privilege to join American Legion Post 255, Lieutenant Colonel Chad Murray of the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, and Boy Scout Troop 100 to pay our respects to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

This morning’s ceremony included the formal reading of names, and the ringing of the bell, served as a powerful reminder of the cost of our freedom. Thank you to Alicia Germany for her moving performance of the National Anthem and to everyone who attended to ensure that those who gave everything are never forgotten.

We remember and we honor them today and every day.

We had an "egg-cellent" morning hanging out with some of Fultondale’s brightest young minds! 🥚🚒

Fultondale Fire & Rescue was honored to assist Fultondale Elementary with their annual Egg Drop competition today. Seeing the way this community rallies to support our children, and their creative scientific minds, truly means the world to us.

What is an Egg Drop?
For those who haven't seen one, it’s a classic STEM challenge! Students must design and build specialized contraptions using various materials to protect a raw egg from cracking when dropped from a significant height. To give the students the ultimate "drop zone," we brought out our ladder truck to see whose designs could withstand the force of gravity!

From parachutes to intricate padding, we saw some incredible engineering today. Whether the eggs survived the landing or became "scrambled" science, we were impressed by the ingenuity and hard work of every participant.

Thank you to the staff and students at Fultondale Elementary for letting us be a part of your day. We’re already looking forward to next year!

Last night, we had the honor of celebrating Lieutenant Shane Holliday at the 2026 Unsung Heroes event hosted by the Alabama Public Service Training Initiative at UAB.

Shane was recognized for his incredible dedication and the critical "behind-the-scenes" work he does as our Administrative Lieutenant. Shane’s leadership ensures that Fultondale Fire & Rescue is always ready to serve our community.

Lieutenant Holliday does this work quietly and without seeking recognition, but the effectiveness of our department is greatly strengthened because of his commitment.

We are so proud of you, Shane! Thank you for your selfless service and for everything you do to keep our team running smoothly.

Alright, listen up Fultondale. I know that massive pile of leaves in your backyard is practically begging for a match, but you’re going to have to resist the urge.

As of April 1st, the Jefferson County Department of Health has officially put the lid on outdoor burning. This isn't just us being the "fun police", it's a mandatory ban that runs all the way through October 31st.

Here’s the deal:

The "Hot Dog" Rule: Unless you are actually cooking food, don't light it. And no, holding a single marshmallow over a burning pile of old fence pickets does not count as a "cooking fire." We’ve seen that trick before.

The Air We Breathe: During these months, smoke reacts with the Alabama heat to create ground-level ozone. It’s bad for your neighbors with asthma, and it’s bad for the crews on the trucks who have to hike through the woods in 90-degree heat because a "controlled burn" got out of control.

Accidental Fire Prevention: Things are drying out fast. A stray ember today is a brush fire tomorrow.

Between you and me, I’d much rather see you at the grill than out in a briar patch dragging a hose. Let's keep the air clear and the fire trucks in the station where they belong.

Hold off on those leaf piles and keep the matches tucked away until the leaves actually start falling again.

Stay safe,

Chief Justin McKenzie

A Message from Chief McKenzie Regarding Emergency Response

To our Fultondale neighbors:
I’ve seen several discussions lately on local community pages regarding close calls with emergency vehicles and questions about why sirens sometimes seem "silent" until we are right on top of an intersection. These are valid concerns, and I want to address them directly.

Our goal is always to get to you as quickly as possible, but we can't help anyone if we don't make it to the scene safely. Here is what is happening behind the scenes when those tones drop:

The "Soundproof" Challenge: Modern vehicles are built to be incredibly quiet. Between acoustic glass and heavy insulation, your car is essentially a rolling sound booth. This means you often won't hear a siren—even a loud one—until we are very close.

Physics of Sound: Siren speakers are mounted on the front of the truck, so the sound is pushed forward. If you are approaching us from a side street or around a building (like the CVS at Hwy 31), that sound is literally being blocked by the environment until our front bumper clears the corner.

Our Policy: FFR crews are trained to "Stop and Proceed" at all red lights. We do not just fly through intersections. We use our mechanical air horns (the loud "honk") specifically to grab your attention in those busy areas.

Digital Sirens: To combat the quietness of modern cars, our fleet is equipped with HAAS Alerting. If you use Waze, Apple Maps, or drive a newer vehicle (like a Jeep, RAM, or Chrysler), you should receive a digital alert on your dashboard when we are nearby with our lights on.

Our Open Door Policy
We want to hear from you. We maintain an open door policy here at Fultondale Fire & Rescue, not just to address concerns or close calls, but because we want you to feel welcome to come by, talk with us, and learn more about how your fire department operates.

If you have a specific question or just want to stop in and say hello, please reach out to me or my administrative staff. I would much rather have a professional conversation with you than see a neighbor get hurt or feel unheard.

🚫 NO OUTDOOR BURNING IN FULTONDALE THIS WEEKEND 🚫

Fultondale neighbors,

The Alabama Forestry Commission has issued a Fire Alert for our area, effective immediately through Sunday night. I’m asking everyone to help us out this weekend.

We are looking at a "perfect storm" of low humidity, dry fuels, and higher winds. In these conditions, you don’t need a lightning strike to start a disaster—a single spark from a dragging trailer chain or an unattended grill can put our community and my firefighters at serious risk.

What you need to know to keep us safe:

No Outdoor Burning: All permits for debris and agricultural burning are suspended. This includes brush piles and campfires. If it has a flame, don't light it.

Equipment Check: If you’re hauling a trailer on I-65 or around town, make sure your chains are secured and not dragging. Those sparks hit dry grass and it's off to the races.

Watch Where You Park: Avoid parking vehicles in tall, dry grass. Your exhaust system is hot enough to ignite a fire in seconds.

See Smoke? Call It In: Don’t assume your neighbor already called 911. If you see smoke, report it immediately so my crews can get on it while it’s still manageable.

Our goal is to keep the boots on the pavement and our woods out of the line of fire this weekend. We appreciate you looking out for each other and for us.

Stay safe,

Chief Justin McKenzie

Severe Weather & Freeze Alert: Fultondale Residents

Fultondale, we have some high-impact weather heading our way starting tonight. I want to make sure everyone is prepared and stays weather-aware over the next few days.

Tonight (Sunday) into Monday Morning:
We are under a Level 2 to 3 risk for severe storms starting around 9:00 PM tonight and lasting until 6:00 AM Monday morning. The main concerns are damaging winds and the potential for a few tornadoes. We are also under a Wind Advisory through Monday afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph.

Storm Shelters:
The City of Fultondale's storm shelters will be open if and when we are placed under a Tornado Watch. Our three city shelter locations are:

Main Storm Shelter: 601 Main St

Central Storm Shelter: 3220 Hubbert Dr

West Storm Shelter: 2520 Walker Chapel Rd (located at the Police Department)

Hard Freeze (Tuesday & Wednesday):
Once the storms clear out, it’s going to get very cold. We have a Freeze Warning in effect for Tuesday morning. Temperatures will drop into the mid-20s on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Chief’s Recommendations:

Secure Your Gear: With those 40 mph gusts, make sure any loose outdoor furniture or items are secured.

Receive Alerts: Ensure you have multiple ways to get weather warnings tonight—especially ones that will wake you up.

Protect Your Pipes: Since we are looking at a hard freeze in the 20s, now is the time to wrap any exposed pipes and check on your neighbors and pets.

Our crews are ready and will be monitoring the situation throughout the night.
Stay safe, Fultondale.

Structure Fire: Outwood Road Incident

Early this morning, just after 6:00 AM, Fultondale Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire at 1947 Outwood Road.

Upon arrival, our crews found heavy fire showing through the roof of a single-story home. Engine 401, 402, and Gardendale Engine 3 quickly made an aggressive interior attack while Ladder 421 provided support.

We were glad to have our neighbors from the Gardendale Fire Department on the scene with us to help knock this down. Cooperation like this is what makes our regional response so effective.

Fortunately, the house was unoccupied at the time, and we are happy to report there were no injuries to our firefighters or the public. The fire is officially out, and our Fire Marshal is currently conducting an investigation into the cause.
