⚠️ STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL CANCELLED

The National Weather Service has cancelled today’s statewide tornado drill due to the potential for severe weather across the region.

Because of this, Callaway County outdoor warning sirens will NOT be sounded at 11:00 AM today for the drill.

While the drill has been cancelled, this is a good reminder to review your tornado safety plans.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week – Day 2: Lightning Safety

WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS

Lightning can strike miles away from a storm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck.

✔ Move inside immediately
✔ Avoid plumbing and electrical appliances
✔ Stay off corded phones
✔ Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside

Lightning is one of the leading weather-related killers — don’t take chances.

Do you know where you would go if lightning started right now?

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon
until 8 pm Thursday across portions of
northeastern, central, and southeastern
Missouri for Critical Fire Danger. Elevated
Fire Danger is also expected near the
Mississippi River.
● This is where low relative humidity,
gusty southwesterly winds, and dry
fuels will lead to Critical Fire Danger
with fires easily getting out of
control.
● Toward the Mississippi River, there
is an Elevated Fire Danger where
conditions will not be quite as
significant, but still favorable for
erratic fire behavior.
● Consider burning a different day.

Missouri : The Great Shake Out Event 2026 !!!!
the Missouri State Emergency Management agency reminding everyone that it is vital that you prepare for an inevitable major New Madrid Fault event.
OCTOBER 15,2026
In case you can't read the small print, they said "At 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2026, you can join more than a million people across Missouri and the central U.S. practicing earthquake safety. While we encourage you to participate with everyone, you can register your ShakeOut drill for any day of the year, and drill at a time of your choice."
This warning to Missourians is a part of the Great American Central US Shake Out event that is planned for later this year on October 15, 2026. The question I have is why do they recommend that you drop, cover and hold on? The answer is because by putting your hand behind your neck and finding cover under a solid object, you're reducing the chances that you'll be hit by flying objects. Many people envision objects falling straight down, but don't realize that a major earthquake jolt can cause objects on the wall to fly across a room and hit you.

▶️16 tornado deaths and 58 injuries

✅The Missouri StormAware site has short videos that show how to protect yourself from severe weather in different scenarios - home, school, mobile home, etc. Check it out here: https://stormaware.mo.gov/

Chances (70-80%) for rain are increasing over the weekend, but it is not a slam dunk and plenty can change between now and then. Specifically, how much rain falls and where across our region and forecast area will be impacted by slight changes in the track of the system and how much moisture it is able to bring in. Why does this matter? If you have outdoor weekend plans, this rain may impact them! But this rain will also help clean streets and cars of lingering salt.
