First time I’ve seen a rainbow end in our yard, actually a pond close to our house. A view from the front porch! I’ll count the blessings of our South Poll Grass Cattle herd and Australian & American White Sheep as our “pot of gold!”

As we are getting ready to host the AWUSA 2025 Field Day on Saturday, September 27, at our farm—Harrison Valley Farms, I’m thinking back on our sheep journey!

My husband, John, and I bought our first sheep in 2007. I wanted to see if my border collie would herd sheep, so I bought 3 registered Katahdins. The dog did not like sheep at all. However, I did!

3 ewes grew to 150 Katahdin ewes. Annually, we sold 150+ commercial Katahdin ewes as replacement ewes through KHSI’s KatPlus program. And we sold “fancy” 70 lb. ram lambs at the local livestock sale barn—always got top dollar because the right buyers were alerted our lambs were coming in.

Fast forward to 2025. Our sheep flock is now 12 Australian and American White (F1) Sheep ewes. We transitioned to the “Whites” because we liked their sturdy body structure, carcass quality, resilience to all kinds of Missouri weather, their casual and calm demeanor, and the lambs’ vigor and rate of gain on mom’s milk and forage.

I truly loved the old style Katahdins, not so much the current body structure style and qualities—I guess I’m old enough to say this… So in 2022, we bought our first registered Australian White Sheep ram from Mark Fechtel of Fechtel South Poll Cattle & American White Sheep .

Photos attached are the Katahdin flock that started my breed up process to the American White Sheep; the Australian White Sheep ram, Finn, that got us started; and a F1 ewe with one of her 2025 Spring Born F2 ram lambs (only 8 weeks old).

I’m interested in what your sheep journey is and why you’re interested in the Australian and American “Whites” sheep!

H326Hercules is our 18 month South Poll Grass Cattle bull that is ready to go to a new home. I've posted an ad on the SPGC Association web site's classified section. Link is in the comments. Winter grazing at its finest! I love seeing our SPGC herd out grazing in the early dawn. No hay fed this winter! John and Janelle do a great job with the rotational grazing. The only hay we've fed to our herd in the last 11 years was a week in Winter 2022 when we unrolled a few large bales for the cows and calves to bed down during an extremely cold week. However, I'm sure looking forward to Spring! Our calving starts April 15th. When does your start? Or maybe, when did you start??

Logan Karcher of Burnt Hill Cattle Co. LLC. and Farraway Farms, recently sent me these photos of a South Poll Grass Cattle heifer he purchased from us in 2020. He is so pleased with her registered bull calf (DOB 4/28/22) sired by one of his herd bulls. How rewarding to hear! Our appreciation is two-fold! We appreciate the producers that believe in our herd genetics and purchase our SPGC cows, heifers, bulls, and steers, as well as the SPGC Association (South Poll Grass Cattle Forum) members that took the time and made the effort to help us start our herd with great genetics! (fyi, we will have 9 heifers available for purchase Spring 2023!)

Check out Burnt Hill Cattle Company! Logan and company are busy folks! They raise and sell commercial and registered SPGC, sell freezer beef (lamb and chicken too), practice regenerative farming plus host informational/training days for this at their farm, Logan has a professional livestock hauling business, and more! Plus he just purchased an amazing border collie to help him manage his stock from the nationally-known sheep herding/dog training team, Thad Fleming and his son Wyatt. Follow him on FB to see all the great things they do!

Beautiful spring day yesterday! Big day for Vixen, one of our LGD yearling pups. First day trusted on tether with our ewes and 2022 March born lambs. She will spend the day tethered with the lambs, supervised by momma, Molly. Molly "dogged" her firmly when I brought her into the lot with the ewes and lambs. Molly takes her job seriously and expects the pups that work with her to be respectful and show low energy. Molly then watches Vixen, lambs, and ewes from a distance. It is incredibly interesting to watch this instinctive training process and I am forever grateful that Molly is such an incredible LGD! Today will be Prancer's turn!

A fun morning at the farm with Becky, Renae Block, and Josh! It was livestock guard dog social time! The yearling pups are full grown now--about 100 lbs. However, they are still puppies at heart and in mind! Doing lots of work with them--basic obedience, walking the farm perimeter, tethering with sheep, and lots of socializing. In this photo, Prancer is getting "some love" from Becky. Prancer LOVES the attention.

Happy 1st Year birthday to our LGD pups! Great Pyrenees/Anatolian/Maremma cross big beautiful dogs now! They are learning to understand their job and be trustworthy at it. Still very playful, yet keen to farm work! Nine pups born last December just had to be named after my favorite reindeer! On Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen! Yes Rudolph too—Rudi for short! 8 of them will be available in 2022!

I picked up baby chicks today from Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon, MO. Too hot in August for them to be shipped USPS, so I decided to pick them up! 97 degrees F here today! Speed is checking them out. I know he is thinking, "Can I herd them?" Silly dog, we herded sheep this morning before the heat set in!
