Our annual One Read Writing Contest has begun! Taking inspiration from Marcellus in “Remarkably Bright Creatures,” we invite you to write something from the point of view of an animal, in 250 words or less. We are accepting entries NOW through September 25.

Your writing can take the form of a very short story, a letter, a poem, an essay or other style or genre. Your piece can be set anywhere, at any time, and its tone can be cheerful, melancholy or anywhere in between, but you must write from the point of view of a non-human animal.

Winning entries and honorable mentions will be published on www.dbrl.org and in the Columbia Missourian, and winners will receive a $25 bookstore gift card. Participants must be age 16 or older and residents of Boone or Callaway Counties.

A champion of champions has finally been named! Our community's favorite One Read pick of the last 24 years, by a VERY slim margin, is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.

Many thanks to everyone who cast their vote, and the winner of the One Read Book Shelf will be contacted soon.

Join us online this week to hear from two acclaimed authors!

On Tuesday, David O. Stewart will join us to discuss his newest work, "The Democracy We Must Keep," and the questions it explores: what did America's founders say about democracy and can we remain true to their vision for America?

On Thursday, join us for a mouth-watering, lively conversation with viral social media star Jenny Martinez as we dive into her celebrated debut cookbook, "My Mexican Mesa, Y Listo! Beautiful Flavors, Family Style."
