Last week's DNOC meeting included an update from Stanton City Council member Donald Torres on the evacuation of much of his community due to the threat of a toxic chemical release or explosion at a GKN Aerospace chemical tank in neighboring Garden Grove. Council member Torres is pushing for reparations and a statewide inventory of industries using toxic chemicals in heavily populated areas. The danger has now passed and cleanup has begun. We need to thank our first responders. We can honor them best by making sure our companies our following the law and I know Rep. Tran will work to make that happen.

Orange County voters weighed in on three pivotal Board of Supervisors races last night. The graphics indicate early returns.

In District 2, incumbent Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento is likely to win re-election outright if his current lead holds. If OC Supervisors receive 50% of the vote plus one, the election is over. If no candidate wins a majority, then a runoff is held in November. That's where incumbent District 5 Supervisor Katrina Foley is heading and so is Buena Park Mayor Connor Traut in his bid to win the District 4 seat. Results will be updated in just a few hours. Go to ocvote.gov for the latest.

The Board of Supervisors oversees billions of dollars in county spending and plays a key role in decisions affecting public health, housing, infrastructure, public safety, and social services. Results remain unofficial until all eligible ballots are counted and certified. We also have early returns from the 67th District State Assembly race which, so far, shows former Cerritos Mayor Mark Pulido qualifying for the November election over endorsed Democratic candidate Ada Briceño.

Chemical Tank Crisis in Garden Grove. During a heated May 26 City Council meeting, authorities announced that all evacuation orders were lifted after the compromised chemical tank successfully stabilized. While a council member motioned to introduce an emergency ordinance to impose a 45-day moratorium on the expansion of GKN Aerospace, there was no vote on the item leaving furious residents demanding accountability and stricter regulations. Here is some background on the plant's troubled history in today's Voice of OC.

A chemical tank emergency in Garden Grove is triggering questions about the effectiveness of state and regional regulatory agencies.

A commencement speech silenced — but not unheard.

After Chapman University removed Student Body President Cintya Felix Mendivil from the official graduation program, students and supporters created an alternative ceremony just blocks away from campus.

As graduates walked out and gathered at a nearby church, Felix Mendivil delivered the speech many believed should have been heard on commencement day.

“There is never a perfect time to be on the right side of history. It will always feel difficult and it will always be scary.”

Watch moments from the student-led commencement and hear why this controversy is sparking conversations about student voice, free expression, and who gets a platform on campus.
