Did you ever wonder why the has a fabulous bust of Benjamin Franklin? Well… he invented bifocals! He first called them “double spectacles” and created them because he was tired of switching glasses, especially during meals to see both his food and the people he shared his meals with across the table. Also, he invented them at age 78! He is known for many other inventions including the lightning rod, odometer, flexible catheter, and glass harmonica!⚡️ 👓

On Wednesday, we received a request from Washington University School of Medicine asking for a 1939 article about trachoma. Trachoma is a contagious bacterial eye infection that, if left untreated, can cause scarring and eventual blindness. It was once a significant public health issue in parts of the US and remains a concern in some countries with low access to safe water or healthcare today. Those old volumes on our shelves are still being put to good use today! Also! This journal was originally at University of Kentucky and is now in our library! 📕📚📘📙📖
