🚴 IDAHO BICYCLE / E-BIKE SAFETY REMINDER 🚴

We’ve received some recent concerns about bicyclists and e-bike riders on local roadways, so here’s a quick reminder for everyone sharing the road.

Under Idaho law, bicyclists generally have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. Riders should travel with traffic, obey signs and signals, use hand signals, stay visible, and ride as far right as practical when safe to do so.

Drivers should also give bicyclists room, stay alert, and be patient.

🚦 Idaho Stop Reminder:
Stop signs may be treated like yield signs, and red lights like stop signs — but riders must still yield and proceed only when safe.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – USPS DELIVERY TEXT / EMAIL SCAM 🚨

We are seeing fraudulent USPS “delivery attempt” messages circulating through text messages and email.

These scams are designed to create urgency and trick people into clicking links, scanning QR codes, or entering personal and payment information.

📸 See the attached image with highlighted red flags.

Common warning signs include:
❌ Suspicious web links that do NOT lead to usps.com
❌ QR codes directing you to unknown websites
❌ Generic messages with no personal information
❌ Threats that your package will be returned
❌ Urgent deadlines meant to pressure you into acting quickly

⚠️ USPS does NOT ask customers to update ZIP codes through random text links or QR codes.

DO NOT:
🚫 Scan the QR code
🚫 Click any links
🚫 Provide payment or personal information

✔️ Delete the message and ignore it
✔️ Block the number or email it came from

Drivers will see more law enforcement on the road from May 11- 31st as part of the Click It or Ticket high-visibility seat belt enforcement campaign.

One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up.

Buckle up all the time — for short trips and long trips, and in every seating position.

Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle; the seat belt slows you down and spreads crash forces over the strongest parts of your body.

We have come a long way with increasing seat belt use over the years, but we still have a problem to address considering that seat belt use varies by time of day, seating position, and region of the United States.

Despite steady increases in observed seat belt use, approximately half of all passenger vehicle deaths are unrestrained. Seat Belts help keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle, whereas not buckling up can result in being ejected from the vehicle in a crash, which is almost always deadly.

From ITD:

Work continues on US-95 May 13 to May 22

Crews are still replacing infrastructure, curbs and gutters on US-95 in Fruitland and Payette. See below for work locations and what to expect through May 22.

We are aware that the Apple Blossom Festival starts today. To stay on schedule, crews will work during the daytime Monday through Friday. There are no scheduled weekend closures.

Thank you for your patience while we perform these needed improvements to US-95.

What to expect:

• Daytime work on curb and gutter
• Lane closures on US-95 depending on activity and location
• Single lane closures
• Reduced to one lane with flaggers where necessary
• Reduced speed limits
• Delays, consider using an alternate route

ALIVE AT 25

Your choices behind the wheel matter
Anyone who has driven through the City of Fruitland in the last few years has undoubtedly noticed that the number of vehicles on our roadways has significantly increased. The Fruitland Police Department has partnered with the Idaho Transportation Department and the National Safety Council to bring Alive at 25 class to our area. This class is a FREE, interactive defensive-driving course designed specifically for drivers aged 15 to 25. Please be aware — there are imitations of this program that charge a fee.

The Fruitland Police Department’s Alive at 25 class is the official, National Safety Council–approved version, offered at no cost to participants thanks to our partnership with state and national safety organizations. This 4-hour course isn’t your typical driver’s-ed class — it’s a real-world look at the decisions young drivers make every day and how those choices can save lives, including their own. Led by certified Fruitland Police instructors, Alive at 25 focuses on awareness, responsibility, and decisions that can make all the difference in safety on the road.

Did you know?
• Young drivers are involved in fatal crashes at more than twice the rate of all others
• Each year nearly 6,000 teens are killed in vehicular accidents; more than 3,800 are drivers aged 15-20 and more than 326,000 young drivers are seriously injured.
• Exceeding the posted speed limit or driving at an unsafe speed is the most common error in fatal teenage accidents
• More than 1,000 young drivers lose their lives each year in crashes because of an impaired driver, be it themselves or someone else
• In a study conducted by the Colorado State Patrol, 1000 random Alive at 25 graduates (500 voluntary and 500 court ordered), 89% of the respondents indicated they believed they would be a safer driver as a result of taking the class and, 92% of the respondents identified that they believed the class helped them improve their driving knowledge and skills. Please remember, half of the respondents did not want to be there and were court ordered, traffic violators.

What to Expect from the Class:
✅ Engaging, discussion-based sessions led by local officers
✅ Real-life scenarios and practical safety strategies
✅ May qualify for court diversion or insurance benefits
✅ A chance to build confidence and responsibility as a young driver

Remember, driving on our roadways is a privilege and we all have a duty to travel safely. Please join us for Alive at 25 and take the next step toward becoming a safer, smarter driver.
