**TRAFFIC SAFETY REMINDER**

The Fruita Police Department recently responded to a crash in which a traffic flagger was struck by a vehicle. Thankfully, incidents like this are preventable, and we want to remind everyone to use extra caution when approaching construction zones, crash scenes, and emergency vehicles.

**Stay focused behind the wheel.**

Put the phone down and avoid anything that takes your attention away from driving.

**Be prepared for sun glare.**

Use sunglasses and your vehicle’s sun visor when needed. If visibility is reduced, slow down and give yourself additional time to react.

**Slow down near construction zones and around curves.**

Flaggers, construction workers, first responders, and other motorists may be just beyond your line of sight.

**Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.**

Give first responders and roadway workers the space they need to safely do their jobs.

**Use an alternate route when possible.**

If you come across a crash scene, road closure, or active emergency response, please don’t attempt to drive through the scene. Follow directions from officers, firefighters, flaggers, and other personnel.

A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a serious injury or tragedy.

**Slow down. Stay alert. Drive safely.**

We’re excited to kick off a new school year with a new group of cadets in our High School Fire Academy!

We are incredibly grateful to the Western Colorado Community Foundation for their generous grant supporting our program. These funds will help provide educational materials, firefighter gear, training supplies, and other resources our students need throughout the academy.

The Fire Academy is made possible through the partnership and support of School District 51 and our fire department, whose continued investment of resources, personnel, time, and expertise allows our cadets to receive hands-on training and a true introduction to the fire service.

Thank you to the Western Colorado Community Foundation for investing in our students and helping us build the next generation of firefighters!

On 8/17 at 2:06 p.m., LVFD was dispatched to reports of a brush fire near J Road and 22 Road. Brush 32, Engine 31, and Chief 32 responded after initial reports indicated a shed may be on fire.

Crews arrived on scene to find a dumpster on fire that had spread into the surrounding brush. Firefighters quickly contained the fire and remained on scene to complete mop-up and ensure no hot spots remained.

Great work by Black Crew on the quick response and containment! 🔥🚒

Stay safe, Lower Valley!

On 8/16 at 1:55 p.m., LVFD was dispatched to I-70 near Mile Marker 214 in Utah for a single-vehicle rollover. Engine 31 and Ambulance 32 responded alongside Grand County EMS & Fire and Utah Highway Patrol.

Firefighters arrived to find one patient trapped inside the vehicle. Crews worked to safely extricate the patient, who was then transported by CareFlight to a nearby hospital.

While crews were working the scene, one of our traffic cones—placed specifically to protect emergency apparatus and firefighters working along the interstate—was struck and destroyed by a passing driver.

Thankfully, this time it was only a cone.

🚨 Please slow down, move over, and pay attention when approaching emergency vehicles. Our firefighters, EMS crews, law enforcement officers, and other responders are working just feet from moving traffic. Giving them a little extra space can make the difference between everyone going home safely and another emergency occurring.

Thank you to Grand County EMS & Fire, Utah Highway Patrol, and CareFlight of the Rockies for the teamwork on this incident.

Stay alert. Slow down. Move over. Help keep our responders safe.
