Each year, Fridley Fire flies the flag from its aerial truck to mark the anniversary of 9/11. Unfortunately, the aerial truck is currently out of commission. The flag has been placed on the front of the building to honor those lost.

September is here and that means it's time for students to head back to school! Here are a few safety reminders for the community to keep in mind:

🚍 Stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm — this applies to drivers coming from both directions on undivided roads.
🚶 Watch for kids walking or biking near schools and crosswalks. Slow down and stay alert in school zones.
👋 Students getting on or off the bus should wait for the bus driver's signal to cross, make eye contact with other drivers and check for cars passing on the shoulder.
👀 If you see something, say something. Students can talk to their school resource officer, a staff member or submit an anonymous tip at FridleyMN.gov/Tip411.

Congratulations to the Fridley Fire Explorers for taking 3rd place at the Fire Explorers Competition during the Governor's Fire Prevention Day at the State Fair!

Fire Explorers from around the state competed in various firefighter skill and knowledge based competitions and show their mastery of these essential fire service tasks.

A great way to end the year for our Explorers who dedicated many hours of practice and hard work. Well done!

Join the Fridley Police Division in the Fireside Room at City Hall on Tuesday, September 15 at 5 p.m. to learn about Fridley's Police Explorers program!

Youth ages 14-21 will learn about teamwork, how to be effective communicators, confidence building, leadership skills and ways to give back to the community. They will participate in hands-on learning, training and activities that Law Enforcement Officers handle as part of their duties.

Interested youth and parents are encouraged to attend this informational session to learn more. We hope to see you there!

Fridley Firefighters recently put on several kitchen and grease fire safety demonstrations throughout the city using a mobile kitchen trailer 🚒

The video below shows the explosive results of pouring water onto a grease fire. As the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States, a cooking fire occurs approximately every 88 seconds nationwide. Here are some important reminders to prevent kitchen fires:

🎛️ Stand by your stove. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the burner.
👀 Watch what you’re cooking. Fires can start when the heat is too high. If you see smoke or the grease begins to boil, turn off the burner.
🍳 Keep a pan lid nearby. If a pan catches fire, carefully slide the lid over it to smother the flames, then turn off the heat.
🚱 Never use water on a grease fire. Water can cause the burning grease to spread and can result in serious burns.

This Monday evening, our Fire Department crews had the opportunity to tour the BNSF Railway yard and get an up-close look at the unique challenges that come with responding to emergencies involving trains and rail operations.

Crews learned about hazards found throughout the rail yard, how to safely operate around locomotives and railcars, and what firefighters can expect when responding to an incident on BNSF property. We also discussed how BNSF personnel and emergency responders can work together to keep everyone safe when seconds count.

Training like this is invaluable. Getting familiar with the environment before an emergency happens helps our firefighters arrive better prepared, make safer decisions, and provide a more effective response.

A big thank you to BNSF Railway for taking the time to show our crews around and share their knowledge!
