📣 Hot off the press: Inside Town Hall - the next Mayor’s Message! 📣

Hello Friday Harbor,

Spring has arrived on San Juan Island, bringing with it a renewed sense of energy and momentum across our community. It’s a season of progress, connection, and preparation for what lies ahead and I want to take a moment to share some of the important work underway.

Investing in What Matters Most
Some of the most important work happening in our town isn’t always visible but it is essential.

We are continuing to make strategic investments in our wastewater and water treatment systems to ensure they remain reliable, resilient, and capable of serving our community well into the future. At the Wastewater Treatment Plant, ongoing improvements are strengthening our ability to protect the marine environment that defines both our economy and our way of life. These upgrades are about more than compliance; they are about stewardship.

Similarly, progress at the Water Treatment Plant is helping ensure that every resident and visitor has access to clean, dependable drinking water. These efforts reflect a clear commitment: to safeguard public health, protect our natural resources, and make responsible, forward-thinking investments. This work may not always be visible, but it is foundational to everything we value about Friday Harbor. I’m grateful to our Public Works team for the professionalism and care they bring to this responsibility every day. I have had the opportunity to tour the facilities and meet the teams that hold all of this together and simply put, they are fantastic and truly care about this town.

Looking Ahead: America’s 250th Anniversary
This summer also brings a truly historic milestone. On July 4, 2026, the United States will mark its 250th anniversary—a moment that invites both celebration and reflection.
Here in Friday Harbor, we have a unique connection to the broader American story. Ours is a community shaped by diverse histories, shared values, and a strong tradition of civic participation. This anniversary is an opportunity not just to look back, but to consider the future we are building together. Plans are underway to recognize this occasion locally in a way that reflects our community’s character, history, and spirit. We look forward to sharing more details soon and hope you’ll take part in what promises to be a meaningful celebration.

A Personal Note
It is an honor to serve this community. I remain committed to keeping our local government transparent, accessible, and focused on the needs of the people it serves.
If you have questions, ideas, or concerns, I encourage you to reach out or attend a Town Council meeting. Your voice matters, and it helps shape the future of Friday Harbor.

I’ll see you around town.
— Evan

🚧 Parking stall & center line striping May 3-5 🚧

Repainting of parking stall stripes and some center lines will take place throughout town Sunday-Tuesday, May 3 - 5, 2026. Motorists are asked to watch for signage and refrain from parking overnight in areas scheduled for painting.

Crews will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 3 on Park Street and Blair Avenue by the high school. Painting in the town core will begin at 10 p.m. Monday, May 4 with an estimated completion time of 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 5. Center line striping on Lampard Road and Malcom Street will begin at 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 with completion before the following morning.

Drivers and pedestrians are asked to proceed with caution in areas where crews are working in the roadway. Vehicle owners who drive over wet paint are advised to immediately wash paint splatters with soap and water or pressure rinse at the car wash before the paint sets and avoid scouring or using solvents that could damage the vehicle’s finish. Additional tips are available online for how to safely remove road paint from vehicle.

Questions regarding this project may be directed to Public Works at (360)378-2154 or [email protected].

💧 Town to flush downtown water lines Feb. 26-27 💧

The Town of Friday Harbor will flush water lines in the downtown core overnight Thursday, February 26 through Friday, February 27. Per state Department of Health regulations, lines must be flushed semi-annually to remove accumulated minerals and sediment in the water distribution lines. Crews will perform the work at night when water usage is low and streets are clear as large amounts of water will flow through gutters and across some streets.

Those using water at this time may notice brief water discoloration, cloudiness, or slight pressure fluctuations. While there is no known health concern associated with this process, those in the downtown core should avoid running taps, washing machines, and dishwashers during flushing. Check for discolored water before using these appliances and run cold water until water is clear. Rewash any laundry washed in discolored water; do not dry items until clean. If pressure remains low, check faucet screens for trapped particles.

Thank you for your cooperation. Questions about water line flushing should be directed to the Water Department at (360) 821-4736 or Public Works Director Mike Liptack at [email protected]
