***WARRANT SCAM ALERT***

The Sheriff's Office has received multiple calls today from community members reporting that they received a phone call from an individual claiming to be Lt. Coleman with the SJCSO. The caller is telling people they have a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty and if they send money, they can quash the warrant.

The Sheriff's Office has no Lieutenant positions, nobody named Lt. Coleman, and we will never call to tell you that you have a warrant and definately won't ask you for money.

If you receive one of the scam calls, DONT SEND ANY MONEY, don't give out personal information, end the phone call, and call dispatch at 360-378-4151 to report the attempted scam.

For the past year, the Sheriff’s Office has been collaborating with the San Juan County Health Department, Northsound Behavioral Health Administrative Services Organization, and Evergreen Recovery Center to develop a Co-responder Program.

This program has been designed to have a co-responder respond to calls involving individuals who are in need of mental health crisis services or substance use treatment. The co-responder would be available to respond to these calls and provide resources that are outside of law enforcement’s scope. This will allow deputies to assess a situation and contact the co-responder to respond to the scene to offer resources when there is no law enforcement action needed.

The hopes are to have a co-responder “peer support” position and a co-responder clinical position. Our goal is to get the people who need mental health crisis services or substance use treatment the resources they need and reduce the number of law enforcement interactions with individuals in need where there is no law enforcement action needed.

***LOCATED***

Emergency personnel have located the missing individual. He is safe and being evaluated by EMS. Huge thank you to everybody involved in the search for this missing individual. This was an excellent example of teamwork, we are very grateful he was found safely and very grateful for all of the efforts of the first responders and volunteers involved in the search. 

Search operations are underway today with mutual aid from Orcas Island Fire, San Juan Island Fire, Lopez Island Fire, and Watcom County search and rescue. 

An air-scent search dog from Summit to Sound is working the Mt. Willard area. The dog and handler are well marked.

A second search dog from Skagit County will be arriving this morning. Well continue to post updates as the search progresses.

12:47 9/2/26 Update: the missing person has been found and is with EMS personnel. This concludes our updates on this incident.

12:15 p.m. 9/2/2026 Update: Coordinated Search and Rescue efforts continue with ground personnel and helicopters from Department of Homeland Security and the Navy overhead.

10:14 am Search Update — Helicopter Operations & Volunteer Info

Helicopter search operations will begin at approximately 10:45 AM with Border Patrol Air and Marine.

Drone Notice: Private drone piloting is illegal during search and rescue operations. It poses a significant threat of injury or death to both ground and air crews. Please do not fly drones in the area.

Community turnout at this morning's 9:00 AM briefing at Station 21 was excellent. Those volunteers have been embedded with operations command staged on Mt. Woolard and are actively assisting with the search.

***Suspect arrested on Orcas Island for an arrest warrant for R**e 3rd degree***

On August 25, 2026, a Detective with the Auburn, WA Police Department contacted the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office regarding a person that they had probable cause to arrest for r**e. The Detective informed the Sheriff’s Office that they were able to ping the suspects on Orcas Island and provided a location where he may be staying.

On August 26, 2026, Auburn PD contacted the Sheriff’s Office and informed us that an arrest warrant for R**e 3rd degree was issued out of King County Superior Court for Justice Hackman 10/25/2005 and asked for assistance in arresting the suspect on this warrant. Multiple deputies on Orcas Island went to the location provided and were able to arrest the suspect on the active felony warrant without incident and he is being transported to Anacortes to be handed over to Auburn PD.

I would like to commend Undersheriff Hairston, Sergeant Peterson, Deputy Stanford, Deputy Norton, and Detective Nawn for swiftly and safely making this arrest without incident.

‼️Vancouver Police Department is the lead investigator in the case of missing indigenous child Jimiah. The Washington State Patrol activated a Missing Indigenous Person Alert on their behalf to help bring 15-year-old Jimiah home safely. She was last seen on foot around 7:30 a.m. on July 24th 2026, in the area of NE 118th Avenue in Vancouver, Washington. It is currently unknown which direction she was heading. Jimiah is 5' 2" tall, weighs about 135 pounds, and has brown eyes with dyed teal hair. When she was last seen, she was wearing a green hoodie and gray cargo shorts, and she had a black backpack with her. If you see Jimiah, please call 911 right away. Anyone with information on where she might be is asked to call the non-emergency dispatch.‼️

Congratulations to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office newest deputy, Alexandra Rodriguez, on her graduation from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy today. Deputy Rodriguez will be assigned to San Juan Island and we are elated to have her on our team. She is excited to get started on her field training and serving her community.

August 6, 2026, Cascade Bicycle Club- Recreational bike ride around San Juan Island

On 8/6/26, there will be a bike ride event on San Juan Island with presumably a large number of cyclists coming off the ferry at 11 am. The maps provided show the route the cyclists will take when they exit the ferry and the route they will take back to the ferry as they come back into town after they are done circling

We all share the roads, and safety is of the utmost importance for everyone. Please be cognizant of the extra bicycle traffic on this day and slow down accordingly. Thank you.

Message from Washington State Ferries on WSF Terminal Closures in March 2027

WSF will be upgrading the vehicle transfer spans at four terminals in Spring of 2027. A portion of this work requires 48-hour service closures at three terminals. After extensive community outreach, the following dates have been selected for the closures:

• Anacortes – Feb. 22-26 (Monday-Friday) (has two slips, only one will be closed at a time – no operational impacts)
• Orcas – terminal closed March 9-10 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
• Lopez – terminal closed March 16-17 (Tuesday and Wednesday)
• Coupeville – terminal closed March 23-24 (Tuesday and Wednesday)

We understand that your communities depend on the ferry system not only for transportation, but also for emergency access, medical and life safety, commercial deliveries, and more. In the coming months we will be working to identify particular pinch points and looking for ways to lessen the impact of these closures.

We would like to work with you and your communities to identify possible challenges and solutions. If your organization has any regular meetings that you would like WSF to attend to discuss this further, please let us know. We’d also be happy to schedule individual meetings.

Theft of Campaign Signs- "Let's be Better"

Well, it's election season, and yet again we have people stealing campaign signs.  Every election season emotions seem to run a little higher than normal. Regardless of everyone's political views or beliefs there is no rational reason for stealing or damaging others property. It is a huge undertaking for someone to make the decision to run for a political office and choose to serve their community and like everyone else they do not deserve to have their property stolen. We all have the choice to either let outside influences control our emotions, or we can choose to be in control of our emotions and our decisions. The sheriffs office has one simple message for everybody, "Let's be Bettter".
