2-11-2024 Lopez Island

Structure Fire reported on the south end of Lopez Island yesterday evening.

Lopez Island Fire and EMS remain on scene monitoring for hot spots. Minor injuries are reported.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.

09:21 a.m. - OIFR Crew and volunteers responded to a call at the Orcas Island Exchange for potentially hazardous materials. Please avoid the area. The Exchange is CLOSED at this time, and there is no estimate for when it will be reopened.

The potentially hazardous materials are isolated and contained, and there is no known threat to humans or the surrounding area at this time. The OIFR crew and staff of The Exchange were evacuated from the immediate area, and a safety zone was implemented as a precaution.

The Department of Ecology has been notified and sent a crew to investigate further. An OIFR crew member will remain on the scene for security. This post will be updated when more information is available.

The San Juan County Fire Marshal's Office has announced that as of today, October 2, the San Juan County fire danger level has been downgraded to LOW. There are still restrictions on open burning. Residential and commercial burn permits are now available for purchase and use. 🧯

Burn permits are available for purchase starting 8am Monday October 2nd. This is for Residential Burn Permits only.

Commercial Land Clearing burn permits are not open until the fire danger risk level is at LOW.
