Today, the City of Fresno proudly proclaimed September 3, 2026, as Dr. Katherine Flores Day, honoring her lifelong dedication to the health, education, and well-being of our community.

Dr. Flores began her medical journey at Stanford University and has spent decades making a lasting impact on the Central Valley. Among her many accomplishments, she served as Assistant Dean of the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program, established the Doctors Academy and Junior Doctors Academy, and served as an Associate Clinical Professor at UCSF Fresno.

After retiring earlier this year, Dr. Flores humbly accepted this recognition — reminding us that behind every accomplishment is a team. She shared her gratitude for her husband and the incredible people who stood beside her, worked alongside her, and helped make her vision a reality.

Fresno is a better community because of Dr. Flores’s leadership, compassion, and commitment to the next generation of healthcare professionals. Congratulations, Dr. Flores, and thank you for a lifetime of service to our community!

🎓 From early learning to safe, healthy communities, Fresno’s children deserve every opportunity to thrive.

Last week, The Children’s Movement of Fresno hosted its 13th Annual State of the Children’s Breakfast, bringing community leaders together to focus on what our children and families need to succeed.

I had the honor of sharing why I believe investing in our young families is so important and why I brought forward the creation of Fresno’s new Child Care Commission. The Commission will bring together families, providers, community partners, and other stakeholders to identify gaps in child care and help develop solutions that make quality, affordable child care more accessible.

This work is personal to me, and I’m proud to help move Fresno toward a stronger future for our children and families.

✨In 2024, I was honored to partner with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library team to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars so that our Fresno youth could experience Dolly’s extraordinary program! 🤍The Dolly Parton Imagination Library exists in thousands of counties across the United States, including Fresno. Dolly’s efforts will never be forgotten, and her impact on children will be forever lasting. Thank you for everything you have done, Dolly.

This morning we were proud to proclaim August 13, 2026 as Rhyen Simon Valdez Day in the City of Fresno, in honor of his admirable legacy.

Surrounded by his beloved family and friends, we came together at City Hall to celebrate a truly beautiful soul. From his dedicated service in the army and his college days at Fresno State to the simple but memorable interactions of his day-to-day life, Rhyen left a lasting mark on everyone he met.

Members of the Fresno State staff presented his family with his Bachelor’s degree in History during this ceremonial presentation.

He will always be remembered as a gentle, ambitious young man whose generous heart brought warmth to everyone he met.
