Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability

Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability Leadership Counsel will fundamentally shift the dynamics that have created the stark inequality that impacts California’s low income rural regions.

Amidst abundance, California is home to what has been referred to as the ‘Appalachia of the West,” among the lowest income cities and towns in the nation, families exposed to myriad environmental hazards, water too filthy to drink and wastewater oozing from dilapidated septic systems. While hundreds of thousands of our neighbors fight for the most fundamental elements of a healthy and thriving com

munity, local and statewide officials too often perpetuate the phenomenon of two Californias through practice and policy, and through acts and omissions. Our experience in rural California has taught us that as long as the most vulnerable populations remain silent and sidelined environmental degradation will continue, infrastructure will crumble, and the most basic of services and amenities will remain beyond the reach for those in need. And, municipal, regional and state-wide policies will continue to further disadvantage low income, rural communities through programs, funding formulas and eligibility criteria that favor wealthier regions. Through community organizing, research, legal representation and policy advocacy we will impact land use and transportation planning, shift public investment priorities, guide environmental policy, and promote the provision of basic infrastructure and services. In collaboration with local and statewide advocates, Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability will reverse trends that have reigned throughout our history and confront the inequality and deficiencies that continue to plague this state.

Daisy is just one out of hundreds of Merced renters who have experienced retaliation and unlawful evictions for simply asking to live in a habitable home.

Renters stay living under harsh conditions due to the lack of support from their landlords and the absence of assistance programs from the City.

Tenants strongly urge the City of Merced, CA USA Planning Commission and Council to adopt enforceable tenant protections under the City’s Housing Element, including a Tenant Relocation Assistance Program and an Eviction Protection Program, that’ll help prevent stories like Daisy’s from continuing.

“Tardamos mucho tiempo pero si se puede ser el cambio, si se puede!”

Mariela is asking the to not overlook neighborhoods like hers during this budget cycle.

She urges the Council to continue to include and beautify Fresno Districts 3 & 5 by investing at least $300K with a $2.1M carryover of Council funding specifically for public works projects into safer streets, public safety measures, and resources from Measure P funds for more parks and community spaces.

The funding is well and alive, so we ask Councilmembers to prioritize wisely and we invite the public to attend Fresno’s budget hearings from June 8 to 12 at City Hall!
