May is Foster Care Awareness Month — a time to recognize the incredible resilience, strength, and courage shown by children in foster care every single day. So many kids are carrying burdens far beyond their years, yet continue to show hope, kindness, and determination in the face of uncertainty.

It’s also a reminder that sometimes the greatest thing a person can give is simply love, stability, and support. If you’ve ever felt a pull on your heart to help, this may be the sign to learn more about fostering, mentoring, supporting foster families, or simply showing up for a child in need.

Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and loved.

💙Human Trafficking Awareness 💙

Human trafficking is happening in communities everywhere—including rural areas. It can involve forced labor or sexual exploitation, and victims are often controlled through fear, manipulation, or coercion.

Traffickers don’t always look like strangers. They can be acquaintances, online contacts, or even people the victim knows and trusts. Vulnerable individuals—especially children and teens—are often targeted.

Warning signs may include sudden changes in behavior, isolation, lack of control over personal identification or money, or someone else speaking for them.

If you see something that doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and report it. Awareness and action can help protect victims and prevent exploitation.

If you suspect human trafficking, you can contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text *233733 (Text “HELP” or “INFO”).

💙Hope and Prevention💙

Child abuse is preventable, and there is hope. When communities come together to support families, provide resources, and educate one another, we create safer environments where children can thrive.

Every positive action—no matter how small—helps build a brighter future for our children. Let’s continue working together to make a difference.

🚨The Importance of Reporting🚨

Speaking up can make all the difference in a child’s life. Reporting suspected abuse or neglect is often the first step in getting a child and their family the help they need. It can connect them with protective services, counseling, and community resources that can prevent further harm.

You do not have to have proof—reasonable suspicion is enough. Many people hesitate because they’re unsure or afraid of being wrong, but it’s important to remember that trained professionals will assess the situation. Your role is simply to report your concern.

In Kentucky, reports of suspected child abuse or neglect should be made through the Kentucky Centralized Intake system by calling 1-877-KYSAFE1 (1-877-597-2331) or by submitting a report online through the state’s reporting system.

Reporting is not about getting someone in trouble—it’s about protecting a child and creating an opportunity for intervention and support. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and speak up.

This reporting system has been provided for your convenience to report suspected instances of abuse/neglect/dependency for which the alleged victim is located, or the incident occurred in Kentucky and the incident does not require an emergency response. 💙Prevention Starts Early💙

Child abuse prevention begins long before a crisis occurs. Supporting families early—through access to quality childcare, parenting education, mental health services, and strong community connections—can reduce stress and create safer environments for children.

Simple things make a big difference: checking in on a struggling parent, offering help, building positive relationships with children, and creating a network of support. When families feel supported, children are safer.

Investing in early support and prevention doesn’t just help today—it builds stronger, healthier communities for the future.

🌟Community Responsibility🌟

Child abuse prevention isn’t just the responsibility of one agency—it takes an entire community. Teachers, neighbors, friends, and family members all play a role in protecting children.

Child abuse offenders come from all backgrounds and are most often individuals known to the child, such as parents, relatives, caregivers, or trusted adults. They may include those who struggle with stress, substance abuse, mental health issues, or a lack of support, but abuse is never justified. Understanding that offenders are often within a child’s circle of trust highlights the importance of awareness, education, and early intervention to protect children.
