San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety and Dive Team Assists in Golden Mussel Mitigation Efforts

On June 9, 2026, members of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and Dive Team successfully removed several submerged vehicles from the San Joaquin Delta waterway system as part of ongoing efforts to combat the spread of invasive golden mussels.

The recovered vehicles were heavily encrusted with golden mussels, highlighting how abandoned vehicles and other submerged debris can serve as habitat for these highly invasive aquatic species. By removing these vehicles from the waterways, Sheriff’s Office personnel not only improved navigational safety and environmental conditions but also eliminated potential breeding and colonization sites for golden mussels.

Golden mussels pose a significant threat to California’s waterways, infrastructure, and native ecosystems due to their rapid reproduction and ability to attach to virtually any submerged surface. The removal of debris and abandoned vehicles is one of many proactive measures being taken to help reduce their spread throughout the Delta.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting the Delta’s waterways through environmental stewardship, public safety, and continued partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies.

Class #186 has completed another significant milestone in their academy journey.

Over the past several weeks at the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, trainees successfully navigated one of the academy's most physically and mentally demanding training blocks. This phase challenged them to demonstrate resilience, discipline, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Each training day required trainees to push beyond their comfort zones while building the confidence, professionalism, and teamwork essential to a career in corrections.

The dedication and determination displayed by Class #186 throughout this challenging portion of the academy reflects the high standards expected of future Correctional Officers serving San Joaquin County.

We look forward to following their continued progress throughout the academy.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office proudly welcomes Deputies Swafford and Denino!

Yesterday, we officially swore in two incredible additions to our team, bringing a combined wealth of experience, dedication, and passion for protecting our community.

Deputy Daniel Swafford joins us after a distinguished 27 year career with the Sacramento Police Department. Over nearly three decades, he has protected the streets as a patrol, motor, field training, problem oriented police officer, and as a detective. We are incredibly honored to have his massive wealth of knowledge and leadership on our team!

Deputy Joshua Denino is a familiar face returning home! He originally started with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in 2015, serving 6 years across our Community Car program, Motors, and Judicial Protective Unit. After spending the last 4 years with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, he is back where he belongs. Joshua is happily married with two kids and thrilled to serve this community once again.

Help us give a big welcome back and a fresh hello to our newest deputies. We wish them safety and success in their continued service to our county.
