Healthcare for all.
We need to triage our broken healthcare system to restore care to as many people as possible. The trillions of 'healthcare' dollars that are being siphoned off as profits by the top, as well as the waste and inefficiency of billing, pre-authorizations and denials from multiple for-profit insurers is the foundational problem and source of waste in our current system. I have a plan to do a full-gut renovation of US health care in common-sense phases to build a world-class system from the foundation up. If we don't do this right the first time, it will fail and we may not ever get another chance.
1. Restore the ACA subsidies; this is an easy step since the framework already exists.
2. Require states to expand Medicaid; again another easy step since the framework exists.
3. Make the VA the premier medical system in the world. Our veterans deserve the best healthcare, period.
4. Improve the quality of tri-care to give our military families the best healthcare available.
5. Begin improving the IHS (Indian Health Service) following the VA model. The US Government has a long history of failing to fulfill its obligations to the indigenous people and it’s time we fixed that.
6. Merge Medicaid, Medicare, and Tricare into a single system to reduce overhead and waste.
7. Expand this new single system with a public buy-in and expanded coverage for children that they can keep as they age.
8. For-profit insurance will gradually phase itself out as a single high-quality efficient option becomes the preferred choice for providers to accept and patients to choose. Displaced workers in the old for-profit system can be provided training and opportunities to find other roles in healthcare that directly help patients, rather than help deny patients care.
9. We watch as local communities and small businesses begin to thrive, wages self-correct to liveable levels, and close-to-home employment opportunities multiply as workers are no longer trapped in a few jobs in large corporations who ‘provide’ insurance. Entrepreneurs are free to start businesses and still acquire insurance for themselves and their families, and pay their employees what they are worth without funding premiums that buy yachts for corporate executives.
10. We watch crime and violence drop. Addiction and financial desperation are driven by lack of access to mental health care, crippling debt, or challenges in holding down a good job due to health issues. Available, affordable health care changes everyone’s opportunities and future for the better, making the American Dream possible.
