Shots Fired Incident

On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at approximately 7:25 p.m., officers with the Fremont Police Department responded to the area of the 200 block of South Goldsboro Street, Fremont, in reference to a reports from several callers of shots fired in the area and a possible shooting.

Upon arrival, officers began an investigation and learned that a dump truck had approached the area and the male driver discharged several rounds toward individuals who were standing near a parked vehicle beside the railroad tracks. The incident did not result in any reported injuries.

The Pikeville Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded and assisted Fremont officers with the investigation.

Through investigative efforts, the suspect vehicle was located in the 300 block of East Norwayne Alumni Way. The suspect, identified as Tory A. Powell, was located and taken into custody without further incident.

Powell was charged with the following offenses:

• Possession of a Firearm by a Felon -Felony

• Assault with a Deadly Weapon: Misdemeanor

• Discharging a Firearm within the City Limits Misdemeanor

Powell was transported to the Wayne County Detention Center and received a $13,000 secured bond set by a Wayne County Magistrate.

The Fremont Police Department would like to thank the Pikeville Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and continued partnership in keeping our community safe.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, one of the most significant military operations in history. On June 6, 1944, more than 156,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the liberation of Western Europe during World War II.

As we remember this historic day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination of the men who faced incredible odds in defense of freedom. More than 2,500 Americans gave their lives on D-Day alone. Their bravery helped change the course of history and secured the freedoms we enjoy today.

The Fremont Police Department joins our nation in remembering and honoring the heroes of the Greatest Generation. Their legacy of service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

National Police Officers Memorial Day – May 15, 2026

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women in law enforcement who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

National Police Officers Memorial Day was established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as a day to recognize fallen officers and the week in which it falls as National Police Week. Since then, communities across the nation have come together each year to pay tribute to those who gave their lives protecting others.

This day is more than remembrance, it is a commitment. A commitment to never forget the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who wore the badge before us. It is also a time to recognize the families, friends, and fellow officers who continue to carry that loss.

The Fremont Police Department stands in solidarity with agencies across the country as we honor the fallen and support those who continue to serve.

We will never forget.

Chief of Police Walter Brannon Braswell

Fremont Police Department, North Carolina
End of Watch Saturday, November 13, 1965

WALTER BRANNON BRASWELL

Chief Braswell was shot and killed with his own weapon while putting two prisoners into a jail cell at the police department. He had arrested a couple following a domestic disturbance. As he placed the female suspect into the cell the male suspect grabbed Chief Braswell's weapon and shot him. The suspects then locked him in the cell where he succumbed to his wounds. Both suspects were apprehended and charged with Chief Braswell's murder.

The male suspect was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison on November 16, 1967. He was paroled on June 26, 1986. In 1989 he served eight months in prison for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Six months later he was returned to prison and served 11 months for an assault. In 1993 he was charged with another murder in Wake County. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years. He died in prison on January 20, 2002.

Chief Braswell had served in law enforcement for 40 years. He had come out of retirement 2 months prior to his murder to act as a temporary chief until a permanent chief could be hired.
