The statewide "Operation Crash Reduction" enforcement campaign begin yesterday!

The 2026 Columbus Day Crash Reduction campaign began on Monday, October 12. The campaign will run through Sunday, October 18.

Law enforcement agencies across North Carolina will be increasing patrols now through Sunday to stop dangerous driving behaviors and prevent crashes.

Incident: Shooting

Fremont Police Department Investigating Shooting; Two Individuals Charged

FREMONT, N.C. — September 14, 2026 — The Fremont Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday evening, September 13, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m. at a residence located at 408 S. Sycamore Street in Fremont, North Carolina.

The Pikeville Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and assisted Fremont officers with the investigation.

Officers responded following a report of a shooting. During the incident, DONJA JMAAL WARD was shot one time in the chest area. WARD was transported for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

As a result of the investigation, the Fremont Police Department has identified RAMELLE MILEK LOFTON, of Dudley, as the suspect in the shooting.
Outstanding warrants have been obtained for LOFTON for the following offenses:
• Assault With a Deadly Weapon With Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury — Felony
•Discharge a Fi***rm Within an Enclosure to Incite Fear — Felony
•Possession of a Fi***rm by a Felon — Felony
•Injury to Real Property — Misdemeanor

LOFTON's last known address is 512 Rollingwood Drive, Dudley, North Carolina. LOFTON has not been taken into custody at the time of this release. Anyone with information regarding LOFTON's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Fremont Police Department or their local law enforcement agency.

During the investigation, KICHEYMIA TIQUETIOSHA CANNON, of 408 S. Sycamore Street, Fremont, was arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact to a Felony. CANNON was issued a $50,000 secured bond and had a first appearance in court scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2026.

Investigators have determined that the shooting occurred inside a residence where three minor children reside and where the children were in close proximity to the area at the time the fi***rm was discharged. No identifying information regarding the children will be released.

The Fremont Police Department reminds the public that the charges listed in this release are allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.

🇺🇸 REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 — 25 YEARS LATER 🇺🇸

Today, the Fremont Police Department joins communities across our nation in remembering the lives forever changed on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation experienced an attack that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 innocent people. Among them were 343 firefighters, 37 Port Authority police officers, 23 New York City police officers, and countless other first responders and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We remember the victims.
We honor the heroes.
We stand with the families who continue to carry their loss.
And we remember the courage displayed by ordinary people during an extraordinary moment in our nation’s history.

The events of September 11 reminded us of the risks that first responders face every day and of the importance of standing together as a community.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Today, and every day, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

25 years later — their sacrifice, courage, and memory endure.

📢 **NORWAYNE ALUMNI & FRIENDS — TRAFFIC & PARKING NOTICE** 🚔💙💛

**September 5, 2026**

First and foremost, the Fremont Police Department would like to welcome everyone who will be in Fremont tomorrow for the **Norwayne Alumni & Friends events!** We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable day as we celebrate with our community.

Please be aware that there will be **multiple events, temporary street closures, pedestrians, and increased traffic** throughout the morning.

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ **NORWAYNE ALUMNI 5K WALK/RUN**

The 5K Walk/Run will take place approximately **6:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.**

📍 The event will take place primarily between **Ballance Road and Pippin Street**, running south to north.

🚗 **NORWAYNE ALUMNI PARADE — PARKING & ROAD CLOSURES**

Parade lineup will begin around **9:00 a.m.** in the area of:

• Vance Street
• Johnson Street
• Chestnut Street
• Ballance Road

🚫 **NO DOWNTOWN PARKING** will be permitted in the following areas from 9:00 am until the parade is over:

• **100 & 200 blocks of East Main Street**
• **100 block of South Goldsboro Street alongside the businesses**

✅ Parking **is permitted along the railroad track side** of South Goldsboro Street.

🚧 **STREET CLOSURES**

Streets will begin closing to traffic at approximately **9:45 a.m.**

🎉 **The parade begins at 10:00 a.m.**

The downtown area and portions of the parade route will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event.

⚠️ **PLEASE PLAN AHEAD**

Please expect:

🚶‍♀️ Increased pedestrian traffic
🚗 Increased vehicle traffic
🚧 Temporary street closures
🎉 Large crowds along the parade route

These closures and traffic restrictions are being implemented to help ensure the **safety of pedestrians, parade participants, motorists, and everyone attending the events.**

We ask everyone to please **slow down, be patient, follow the direction of law enforcement and event personnel, and use extra caution when traveling through Fremont.**
