DID YOU KNOW? On March 31, 1776, exactly 250 years ago today, Juan Bautista de Anza and a small exploration group rode quickly by the Ohlone village of Oroysom in present day Fremont, a site noted by Anza's Expedition as a potential future mission site. They were tasked to build and sustain a military fort to guard the entrance to San Francisco Bay and to establish the first Spanish town in Alta California, the Pueblo of San Jose. Mission San Jose's Patio Garden has a USA Bicentennial marker commemorating the Anza Expedition.
