On Friday, June 12, 2026, the City of Freeport will have a contractor testing and performing maintenance to the outdoor warning sirens throughout City limits. All six (6) sirens will be affected during the hours of 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 pm. Officials want to warn residents in this area that they MAY hear a brief siren activation while working on the system.

Though there is no severe weather threat yet on the forecast for this time, the City of Freeport would advise that you pay attention to National Weather Service notifications if confusion arises.

Anybody want water? 😅

This is what happens when mother nature wants to interrupt a project. The Downtown Municipal Lot is designed to where the rain water will drain on the North end of the lot, exactly where these pools of water are. Drains are usually cut out a week or so after initial paving. With this project, it rained heavily just 24 hours after paving.

So, go ahead and make your jokes (We find them funny)! In the end, we'll all be using it just the same.

MEETINGS MOVING LOCATIONS:
To continue our growth and partnership with our community residents and business leaders and to include the broader aspect of technology, Neighborhood Watch Meetings will be held at the Freeport Public Library starting in August 2026.

Meetings will be held in their original location in June. However, there will be no meetings held in July. Starting in August, each Ward will still meet on their normal scheduled day, now at the Library.

This allows our new Community Lieutenant to meet the community residents, demonstrates the enhanced public information we will be sharing through power point presentations, restructures the FPD's information/services to the public, and allows for the community to be gathered in a familiar civic environment.

VACANT TO VALUED:

The property at 52 N. Bailey St. was sitting empty for years, overgrown and in disrepair. Today, after the Northern Illinois Land Bank (NILBA) stepped in, you’d never know.

When the City of Freeport referred this property to NILBA for acquisition, it was saddled with $16,000 in unpaid taxes and other debt accumulated over six years. NILBA cleared its title and liabilities and sold to a motivated private developer. The new owner intends to restore the home as a rental property.

Once Land Bank properties are purchased, they are required to complete renovation within nine months or demonstrate continuing progress. The developer met that standard, securing permits, resolving structural issues uncovered during inspection and completing all work in just 10 months. This house is now ready to welcome a family.

After its renovation, the property value has nearly tripled, restoring the value of the home and those in the neighborhood. More than that, we will gain a new resident – a neighbor who has the opportunity to integrate into the community, becoming another vibrant thread in the tapestry of Freeport.

The City of Freeport joined NILBA in 2019 to receive support in cleaning up abandoned sites and recouping essential tax funds.

"We attended last year's event, and this year was way simpler, easier, and better for everyone." - Freeport resident at the Electronic Recycling Event

We love hearing that the adjustments from last year's recycling event resulted in improved experiences! While we won't have the final numbers until late next week, there were at least 200 vehicles let through the gate by 9 a.m.

Huge shoutout to the Stephenson County Fairgrounds for letting us utilize the grounds and take advantage of the open space. In addition, the Fairgrounds staff were responsible for establishing a more organized line this year. (Even though we didn't need it 😉)

Thank you to Lexington Computer Recycling for coming all the way from Kentucky to help us recycle properly and coming prepared with a system that helped eliminate the line that we saw last year. Shane and his team did a tremendous job being prepared for a storm while ultimately enduring humid and hot weather.

And lastly, thank YOU, the residents, for helping us once again run a successful event that fights illegal dumping. Let's do it again next year?

Progress being made on Well #12!

The City of Freeport was awarded $31 Million through the Illinois EPA’s Emerging Contaminants grant and forgivable loans to build out Well #12 and continue to improve water quality in Freeport.

Portions of this funding were awarded to the City through the work of members of Fehr Graham in early 2025, with the remaining $14 Million being awarded in December 2025.

Well #12 is being built at the South entrance of Krape Park on Forest Road. The Well will continue to improve water quality and increase water capacity as it serves the low zone of the City.
