Did you know? The Port of South Whidbey formally committed to environmental protection all the way back in 1990, when commissioners adopted a resolution to safeguard the district’s air and water quality from toxic and hazardous substances. That commitment was expanded in 1992 to include noise standards. Protecting the island’s environment has always been part of the mission. These photos are an example of the changes that have been made to the South Whidbey Harbor in the past 100 years.

Did you know? The Port secured an $688,610 Rural County Economic Development grant from Island County in 2018 to invest in Fairgrounds infrastructure — funding three-phase electrical power, a new restroom facility near the horse barns, and critical water system upgrades that protect public health. Smart grant-writing means more value from every tax dollar. 🔧

A big thank you to everyone who rode the Harbor Hopper Ferry this summer between Langley and the Port of Everett Marina. There are plans in the works to bring this route back next summer and have more frequent runs, too!

Did you know? The iconic Skarberg Pole Building on the Fairgrounds was constructed as a project of the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. Beginning in 1935, using peeled logs harvested right here on South Whidbey and employed many local workers over two years. Today, the Port of South Whidbey preserves and maintains this piece of living history for generations to come. 🪵

Did you know? The Whidbey Island Fair has roots going back to 1912, making it one of the oldest county fairs in Washington State! Originally held in Coupeville, it relocated to Langley in 1917. The Island County Fair Association became a nonprofit in 1923, and permanent fairground buildings began going up. Today, the Port of South Whidbey stewards this beloved community institution.

"The Port of South Whidbey is looking to add more EV chargers to the island’s South End as the popularity of electric vehicles continues to grow in Washington.

The project would install four DC fast chargers on port property. It is being undertaken by eFormative Options, a Washington-based clean energy consultancy, under a contract with the state Department of Commerce.

According to the proposal, two 400-kW ElectricFish chargers, each with two charging ports, would be built in the Humphrey Road ferry parking lot in Clinton. The other two would be built in the camping area adjacent to the Whidbey Island Fairgrounds in Langley. The project would also add a 20-kW, 15-by-65-foot solar carport to both sites that will be integrated with the charger’s system.
