A Message to our Fredonia Families Regarding Supplemental Curriculum
At Fredonia Schools, our primary mission is to provide a high-quality education that prepares students for the future while respecting the values of our community. We believe that parents are the primary stakeholders in their children’s lives, and we take our partnership with you seriously.
Recently, it was brought to our attention that a supplemental career exploration lesson—provided by the Arizona Department of Education—contained a student sample that many in our community found controversial. Specifically, within a lesson focused on how personal values influence career paths, one of the six student examples used to model the assignment touched on political and social topics that were not vetted by our local staff.
The lesson was designed for independent student work and included various examples ranging from conservation and hunting to social issues like LGBTQ youth advocacy. While these materials were provided by the state, we recognize that as your local school district, the final responsibility for what enters our classrooms rests with us.
In response to this, we are taking the following steps:
Immediate Review: The specific lesson has been paused while we review the supplemental materials provided by the state to ensure they align with our community’s expectations.
Enhanced Vetting: We are refining our internal process for reviewing independent digital curriculum to ensure that "independent study" does not mean "unsupervised content."
Open Dialogue: We want to hear from you. We invite any parent with questions about this or any other curriculum to contact the school office or schedule a time to meet with our administration.
Our goal is to keep our focus where it belongs: on the academic success and well-being of our students. We are grateful for the parent who brought this to our attention and for a community that stays engaged in our children’s education.
Together, we will continue to ensure Fredonia Schools remains a safe and respectful environment for all families.
Sincerely,
Dorene Mudrow, Superintendent
