FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 5

Do You Know How to Use a Fire Extinguisher?

Most people know they should have a fire extinguisher in their home — but would you know what to do with it when a fire actually starts?

Remember PASS:

P — Pull the pin.
A — Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
S — Squeeze the handle.
S — Sweep from side to side.

Fire extinguishers are intended for small, contained fires. If the fire is growing, producing heavy smoke, or you aren’t sure you can safely extinguish it, get out and call 911.

A few important reminders:

* Keep extinguishers easily accessible and not hidden behind cabinets or clutter.
* Check the pressure gauge regularly.
* Make sure you have the correct type of extinguisher for the hazard.
* Never put yourself between a fire and your exit.
* When in doubt, get out!

🚒 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 4 🚒

Close Before You Doze!

Did you know that simply closing your bedroom door before going to sleep can help slow the spread of fire and smoke?

A closed door can help reduce the amount of smoke and heat entering a room, giving you more time to wake up, react, and escape.

Tonight, make it a habit:

• Close your bedroom door before going to sleep.
• Keep bedroom doors closed when you’re not in the room.
• Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly.
• Keep phones and other devices off beds and away from anything that can catch fire.
• Never leave candles, cooking, or other heat sources unattended.

And remember: A closed door is not a substitute for working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan, it’s another layer of protection.

One small habit can make a big difference.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 3

🚪 Know TWO Ways Out!

When a fire starts, you may only have minutes—or even seconds—to get outside safely. That’s why every home should have two ways out of every room, whenever possible.

Take a few minutes today to walk through your home with your family and:

• Identify two exits from each bedroom and living area
• Make sure windows and doors can open easily
• Keep exits and hallways free of clutter
• Make sure everyone knows where to meet once they are outside
• Practice your escape plan—especially with children

And remember: Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside for people, pets, or belongings.

A little planning today can make a life-saving difference tomorrow.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | DAY 2

Fire safety starts before the fire ever starts.

Many home fires are preventable, and knowing a few simple safety habits can make a big difference.

Today’s reminder: Take a few minutes to look around your home and identify potential fire hazards.

🔥 Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heat sources such as space heaters, fireplaces and stoves.

🔥 Never leave cooking unattended. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or cooking at high temperatures.

🔥 Keep electrical cords in good condition and avoid overloading outlets or power strips.

🔥 Make sure smoke alarms are working and located on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

🔥 Keep a fire extinguisher accessible and make sure everyone in your household knows where it is and how to use it.

🔥 Have a family escape plan and practice it. Everyone should know two ways out of every room when possible and where to meet outside.

Fire prevention isn’t just something firefighters talk about — it’s something we can all practice every day.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK STARTS TODAY! 🔥

October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week, and this year we’re charging into fire safety!

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing a new fire and life safety tip each day to help keep you, your family, and our community safe.

From lithium-ion battery safety and smoke alarms to cooking fires, escape plans, and knowing what to do when seconds matter, we’ll be covering simple things everyone can do to prevent fires and stay prepared.

Today’s reminder: Fire safety starts before the fire ever happens.

Follow along all week and share these posts with your family and friends. A few minutes of prevention today can make a life-saving difference tomorrow.

September 11, 2001 — 25 Years Later

25 years have passed, but we will never forget.

Today, we remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, including the 343 firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority officers, and countless other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We remember the families who never got to say goodbye. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness displayed that day.

As firefighters, we carry their legacy with us every time we answer the call. Their sacrifice reminds us of the true meaning of service: to protect others, no matter the risk.

25 years later, their names are still remembered. Their sacrifice is still felt. Their legacy lives on.

🇺🇸 2,977 lives. Countless heroes. One day we will never forget.
