Last nights training night consisted of a mock motor vehicle accident requiring patient extrication. We were joined by our partners from Belgium Fire Department, Ozaukee Central Fire Department, and our Medical Director from Advocate Aurora Health.
Upon arrival, crews assessed the scene and worked together to safely access and remove the patient from the vehicle. Firefighters utilized the Jaws of Life and hydraulic cutters to remove the doors and take the roof off the vehicle, allowing EMS personnel easier access to provide patient care. Throughout the extrication process, EMS crews stabilized the patient and prepared them for transport.
As part of the scenario, we also incorporated our new blood product program. Ozaukee Central Fire Department responded with blood products and integrated them into patient care, allowing crews to practice the coordination and procedures involved with this advanced treatment option in a realistic field environment.
This exercise provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen interagency coordination, practice critical rescue skills, and improve patient care in a realistic scenario.
