A family of four and their dog safely escaped their burning home in South Orange on Wednesday morning thanks to their working smoke detectors, the mayor said.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in the basement of a home on the 200 block of Prospect Street and left one firefighter with minor burns, according to Mayor Sheena Collum.
