At approximately 7:05 a.m. on August 31, 2026, the Fredericksburg Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a report of a structure fire in the 1200 block of Stafford Avenue.

Fire units arrived shortly after the call and firefighters quickly deployed multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire completely.

At the height of the incident, the Fredericksburg Fire Department, along with Spotsylvania County Fire, Stafford County Fire and Rescue were on scene. No injuries were reported. The structure was occupied at the time of the fire, and all occupants self-evacuated. A secondary search was done, verifying that no residents were found inside.

The Fredericksburg Fire Marshal's Office (FMO) conducted a routine origin-and-cause investigation. The fire resulted from improperly discarded rags that had been used to apply linseed oil to a surface. Rags containing linseed oil and other oily substances can generate heat and spontaneously combust if they are not properly handled and disposed of. A full report will be available in several days.

An informational bulletin from the National Fire Protection Association regarding the safe handling and disposal of oily rags is attached. Please review the information and ensure your smoke alarms are in working order when handling or storing oily rags.

Additional questions should be directed to Fire Chief Michael Jones. FredericksburgVA.gov/Fire and 540-372-1059.
