Rappahannock CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocates

Rappahannock CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocates Rappahannock CASA advocates for abused, neglected and abandoned children in court. We strive to make sure every child grows up in a safe, stable home.

Rappahannock CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) speaks up for the safety and well-being of children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned by their parents. Our volunteer advocates, with staff support, examine the children's lives, assess their needs and make recommendations to judges about how to protect the children and steer them toward healthier futures. Most children we serve are in foster care, while some are with relatives or at home under protective orders.

You can help a child build resilience by:

• Using a daily “feelings check-in,” which can build emotional awareness and coping skills. What was a high point today? What was hard today? How did you handle that?
• Practicing “growth mindset” language. For instance, when a child says, “I can’t do this,” add the word “yet.” That reframes the setback as temporary and reminds children that mistakes help our brains grow.
• Role-playing problem-solving by acting out common challenges (losing a game or having an argument with a friend) and brainstorming 3 ways to handle the situation. That strengthens flexible thinking and confidence before real stress happens.

Emotional coaching can strengthen a child’s resilience. Children who are taught to name their emotions, problem-solve and practice calming strategies are more likely to bounce back from setbacks.

Resilience isn’t about handling everything on your own. Sometimes, it’s knowing when to ask for help, a sign of emotional maturity. It means you recognize your limits, can name what you need and have built a supportive community you can turn to. CASA volunteers advocate for services that help our kiddos heal and grow, and in one-on-one conversations, they remind the children they’re serving that they are worthy of care.

CASA advocates, who are appointed by judges to serve abused and neglected children, are a consistent, comforting and responsible presence in the lives of children who have been exposed to trauma. According to the Harvard University Center on the Developing Child, having at least one consistent, supportive adult dramatically increases a child’s ability to cope with stress and adversity and is one of the strongest protective factors for resilience.

Challenge No. 1: By 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, give a shout out to a consistent, supportive individual in your life by posting about them below or on your own page (remember to tag us and use the hashtag so we can find you).
