The Fredericksburg Police Department has received grant funding from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), which supports criminal justice programs and public safety initiatives statewide. This funding will establish an additional part-time School Resource Officer (SRO) position in Fredericksburg City Schools.

The new part-time SRO is expected to be assigned to Lafayette Upper Elementary School. This investment marks the first time all five Fredericksburg City Schools will have full-time School Resource Officer coverage.

SROs serve as mentors, educators, and trusted safety partners within our schools, helping to build positive relationships with students while supporting safe, supportive learning environments. Expanding coverage to every school strengthens that commitment and ensures consistent access to an officer for students, staff, and families.

In addition, the grant will fund specialized educational tools, including Fatal Vision® Alcohol Impairment Goggles and Fatal Vision® THC Goggles, which provide hands-on learning experiences that demonstrate the effects of impairment and reinforce the importance of making safe, healthy choices.

The Fredericksburg Police Department looks forward to continuing its strong partnership with Fredericksburg City Public Schools, families, and community partners to support student success, safety, and well-being.

The Department will begin advertising the new part-time SRO position later this month.

𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Strong winds can cause significant damage and create hazards, including downed utility lines from snapped poles and fallen trees.

There are 5 categories of Hurricanes, and these are based on the sustained winds associated with the storms. Category 1 Hurricanes have sustained winds of 74-95 mph and can result in some damage, while Category 5 Hurricanes have sustained winds in excess of 157 mph and can result in catastrophic damage. The rating system is known as the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Learn more here: 🔗https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php.

If you encounter downed power lines, never approach them and contact your electric company (in the City, that is Dominion Energy). Be patient, as these crews can’t work if the winds exceed the safety ratings of their equipment.
