Throughout the month, RAHD will be sharing tips relating to food safety.

Today's Food Safety Education tip: Hand Washing - When to Wash and How to Wash

Handwashing is essential for protecting consumers and food handlers. Ensuring hands are properly washed at critical times during food preparation can significantly reduce the possibility of foodborne illnesses.

📣Virginia Food Regulation updates take effect September 10, 2026! 📣

Food establishments across Virginia should be aware of several important updates to food safety requirements, including:
🥜Sesame is now the 9th major food allergen
📝Food Establishments must disclose the presence of allergens in food
🍽️New provisions related to preparing foods with manufacturer’s cooking instructions
🌡️Updated requirements for monitoring TCS food temperatures during thawing
🚰Hot water minimum temperature is now 85°F
🚭Tobacco-use provisions now include vapes, pouches, and other ni****ne products
🦪Updated requirements for documenting the source of molluscan shellfish
📒The Person in Charge (PIC) also has updated responsibilities related to allergen awareness and employee training.

Recently, a food facility operator contacted our Environmental Health Specialists to report they had received a call from someone claiming to work with the VDH Environmental Division and stated they were going to conduct an inspection at a specific day and time. This call did not originate from our organization, and we wanted to take the opportunity to remind our establishments of the following information.
