Cowan Boulevard isn’t going to be featured on a postcard of Fredericksburg or make it into a tourism brochure at the Visitor Center, but it is home to thousands of Fredericksburg residents. This is a picture of Cowan Boulevard from this afternoon. Nothing dramatic about it. Just people driving to and from work, getting dinner, or passing through to Central Park.
That ordinary and everyday quality is important to those of us who live here. The data center proposal would have likely required transmission lines running along this corridor in front of subdivisions, apartment complexes, and 55+ communities that thousands of people call home. For them, that isn’t an abstract land use question. It’s their front yard.
Last night, City Council voted 7 to 0 against this project. Decisions like this aren’t only about zoning maps or transmission line routes. They’re about making sure the places where people build their lives get treated with the same care as anywhere else in this city. Cowan Boulevard deserves that.
