Severe thunderstorms are in the forecast and it is important to understand what to do when warnings are issued. Frederick County is at risk of flash flooding, damaging winds, tornadoes, hail, and lightning. The National Weather Service predicts that 1 pm to 7 pm will be the peak storm activity, however any of the storm bands can produce severe thunderstorms.

When a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning is issued, “Go inside, stay inside.” Immediately go inside a sturdy building and stay there until the Warning ends. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. An underground area, such as a basement or storm cellar, provides the best protection from a tornado.

- Seek a small, interior room or hallway on the lowest floor.

- Stay away from doors, windows, and outside walls.

- Avoid places like garages, gymnasiums or warehouses that have flat, wide-span roofs.

- For Tornado Warnings, a basement provides the best protection.

Sign up for National Weather Service Warnings at FrederickCountyMD.gov/ALERT. Text AlertFC to 888777 to opt-in to text alerts about severe impacts from the storm.

We are proud to share that Transit Services of Frederick County has been awarded new federal funding to strengthen Transit-plus, the County’s essential paratransit service for older adults and people with disabilities. The funding, awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s FY25 Buses and Bus Facilities Program, will allow Transit Services to add new accessible vehicles and continue providing safe, reliable transportation countywide. Read more in the press release: https://publicinput.com/Email/t402775

New federal funding is helping us expand Transit‑plus, the service many older adults and neighbors with disabilities rely on every day.

With this support, the County will add new accessible vehicles, making it easier for people to get to work, medical appointments, grocery stores, and community programs.

Transit‑plus is more than transportation; it’s a lifeline that keeps people connected, independent, and active in our community.

We’re grateful for this investment and excited to keep strengthening mobility for everyone in Frederick County.
