Expect multiple rounds of widespread showers & t-storms (some severe) Wednesday- Wednesday night as a cold front pushes through the area. Localized flash flooding is possible over the Alleghenies where some of the heaviest rain looks to fall. Outside of the flood threat expect instances of damaging winds with any storms that form. As you head into a fun and SAFE long weekend, our incredible 9-1-1 professionals will be here for you.

9-1-1 is so much more than answering phones. Here’s a peek behind the scenes at what Wednesday afternoon, including the severe storms, looked like.

In a span of 4.5 hours, some of our staff were answering 687 calls. Others were busy dispatching resources and monitoring over 4000 radio transmissions for 370 incidents.

The world doesn’t stop turning during high impact incidents like storms– only 52 of those 370 incidents were storm related.

And this isn’t all they do – they’re gathering information, guiding people through life-saving actions, inputting data, making notifications, talking to first responders in the field and more.

We hope you never need to call 9-1-1 – but if you do, rest assured, they are here 24/7 ready to answer the call.

Are you a regular at hot yoga class? This post isn’t for you.

Everyone else….it is hot. It’s going to be hotter tomorrow.

You are not used to the heat.

Your dog is not used to the heat.

You and Fido ARE at risk of heat illness.

Avoid being outside during the hottest parts of the day: 11 AM – 7 PM with extra caution between 1PM and 7PM. This is typical not 100%, so use common sense and check the weather.

If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and drink lots of water.

Keep an eye on infants, toddlers, adults over age 65, and those with chronic illness or disabilities.

Yesterday, County Executive Fitzwater paid our 9-1-1 center a visit to deliver a proclamation in honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. She took the time to talk with staff and personally thank them for their dedication and calm presence that impact the Frederick County community every day.

It’s a job that often is demanding and thankless, yet they show up day in and day out. We’re grateful to County Executive Fitzwater for taking the time to show staff their work is seen and appreciated.
