Today, I was proud to join our partners for the groundbreaking of Madison on North Market, a significant step forward in our efforts to expand affordable housing in Frederick County. This new apartment complex is the result of years of planning, partnership, and strategic investment. Frederick County played a key role by providing early funding to acquire the property nearly two years before construction financing was secured. Combined with our Deferred Loan Program and Impact Fee Waiver, that investment helped turn this into a reality. I’m grateful to Frederick County Division of Housing, our public-private sector collaborations, and the many local and state partners whose teamwork and innovation made this milestone possible.

When completed in spring 2027, Madison on North Market will offer 60 affordable apartment units, all reserved for income-qualified residents, including dedicated units for individuals with disabilities and households earning at or below 60% of the Area Median Income. Projects like this strengthen our community by expanding access to housing, supporting economic stability, and ensuring more Frederick County residents have the foundation they need to build a brighter future.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Madison, the developer’s young daughter and the inspiration behind the name Madison on North Market!

With Frederick County Government, MD, I am pleased to announce $500,000 in Frederick FEED Grants to 19 local nonprofits, including food banks, pantries, and faith-based organizations, working to meet increased demand for food assistance following the recent federal government shutdown. Launched last year in partnership with the Community Foundation of Frederick County, the FEED Grant Program strengthens our local food distribution network by supporting food purchases, essential supplies, and critical equipment like refrigeration and storage. This second and final round of funding builds on that effort and reflects our continued commitment to ensuring frontline organizations have the resources they need to help prevent hunger and support our neighbors across Frederick County: www.frederickcountymd.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/5823

Families across Frederick County will have greater access to nutritious meals through the awarding of $500,000 in Food Equity and Emergency Distribution (FEED) Grants supporting 19 local nonprofits 🤝.

Launched last November by Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater in partnership with the Community Foundation of Frederick County, the FEED Grant Program strengthens local food distribution efforts by supporting food purchases, essential supplies, and equipment like refrigeration and storage.

This marks the second and final round of FEED Grants. Congratulations to all awardees! 🎉 Read more about the program and see the list of awardees through the press release: https://publicinput.com/Email/w734168

This evening, I joined various County and Maryland Chamber of Commerce leaders, business owners, and community partners for the 3rd Annual Multi-Chamber Mixer. Collaboration and partnership are more important than ever, and our shared commitment to addressing challenges and creating opportunities continues to strengthen our local economies.

Frederick County is making meaningful progress through initiatives focused on long-term economic growth and opportunity for all. This year, the County released its first Procurement Disparity Study, a top priority of mine, to identify barriers and expand opportunities for small and minority-owned businesses (FrederickCountyMD.gov/DisparitySurvey) while Frederick County Office of Economic Development unveiled its updated Strategic Growth Plan.

Thank you to Secretary Walter Simmons of Maryland Department of Social and Economic Mobility for your strong message about supporting local businesses, our amazing Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, and to everyone who attended and shared more about their work, chambers, and industries!

It was an incredible honor to meet with U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Kimberly Walz, a Maryland native and graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Throughout her career, Rear Adm. Walz has held numerous key command positions and now serves as Reserve Deputy Director of Maritime Operations at U.S. Fleet Forces Command, continuing to guide critical operational and strategic initiatives for the Navy. Our conversation covered community partnerships, public transit, housing affordability, and supporting our senior population. Rear Adm. Walz also shared insights on Frederick County and America’s 250th anniversary events, along with her visit to The City of Frederick, Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, and Frederick County’s Veteran Treatment Court. Glad to be part of your warm welcome to Frederick County!

On this solemn day, I presented a proclamation at the Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion Auxiliary Memorial Day Ceremony, paying tribute to the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. On Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who never returned home and to honor the families who carry their memory forward with strength. We also hold close in our hearts the veterans who came home bearing the enduring weight of loss and sacrifice. Today and always, we offer our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and recognize that their service, courage, and legacy will never be forgotten.
