Frederick County Sustainability Commission

Frederick County Sustainability Commission The commission provides a community-based perspective on issues related to sustainability and guides development of a Frederick County Sustainability Plan.

Long-term, community sustainability is not achievable without the investment and collaborative spirit of residents, businesses, schools, volunteer groups, non-profits, and government agencies. There are simply too many roles for 1 individual or organization to fill; a community-wide commitment is needed to make substantial contributions toward our goals. In order to engage the community and learn

from the diversity of voices present in Frederick County, the County established the Sustainability Commission in 2009. The commission provides a community-based perspective on issues related to sustainability and guides the development of a Frederick County Sustainability Plan. Meetings

On World Bee Day we are excited to announce that Frederick County and the City of Frederick have both become part of the Bee City USA program! That means we are strengthening our commitment to protecting natural habitats and taking actions to support pollinators.

Pollinators are key not only to environmental health but also play a critical role for our farm community. Fly on over to our website to see how you can help bee the change- from planting native wildflowers, to reducing garden chemical use, and maybe leaving a few piles of leaves at the edges of your yard. Many small actions can make a big buzz!

What is the Master Gardener Program?
The University of Maryland Extension Master Gardener Program is designed to train volunteer horticultural educators to support the University of Maryland Extension mission by educating residents about safe, effective and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities. Volunteers receive 40 hours of classroom, hands-on, and virtual instruction in their county of residence so that they can then teach members of their community through workshops, presentations, demonstrations, and more.

Who Can Become a Master Gardener?
Any Maryland resident, 18 years of age or older, who likes working with people and plants and has a thirst for knowledge. Active Master Gardeners maintain 20 hours of volunteer service as well as 10 hours of continuing education each year.

Why Join the Program?
By joining the program, you'll have the opportunity to learn new gardening skills as well as hone your existing skills. You'll also learn how to solve gardening problems, and be able to teach others to do the same. Best of all, you'll meet new people who enjoy gardening just as much as you do!
