Two-hundred-and-five years ago today, on October 25, 1812, the USS United States, under the command of the brilliant Stephen Decatur, came upon, attacked, and captured the HMS Macedonian. Decatur’s capture of the British frigate was the second of several ship-to-ship actions during the War of 1812 that demonstrated the young US Navy’s ability to punch far above its weight.
Before his victory over the Macedonian, Decatur had already earned a reputation as one of the most daring naval commanders in the Age of Sail.
As a young lieutenant in 1804, Decatur had led a detachment of United States Marines into the harbor of Tripoli in North Africa and destroyed a captured American warship in order to deprive the Barbary Pirates of its use. None other than Horatio Nelson called Decatur’s raid “the most bold and daring act of the age.”

On this day, 220 years ago, USS Constitution was launched into the Boston Harbor and commissioned as an active duty warship in the United States Navy. However, her story began long before this day.

When the American Revolution ended, the new government of the United States decided to auction off its last ship, a frigate named Alliance, for a sum to help pay the national debt. With this act, the Continental Navy ceased to exist. Without the protection of a Navy the merchant ships of the United States became easy targets for pirates. The Barbary Corsairs of North Africa attacked our merchant ships with little rest in between. For a while the government of the United States did not want to build a navy. The pirates would not stop attacking us and something had to be done. In March of 1794, President George Washington signed an Act to Provide a Naval Aramament, authorizing the construction of six frigates. Constitution would become one of those six.

In the summer of 1795, Constitution's keel was laid in Edmund Harrt's shipyard in Boston. Two years later, her hull was completed and she was deemed ready for launch. On September 20, 1797, a crowd gathered to watch Constitution and at approximately 11:20 am the ship's constructor, Col. George Claghorn, gave the order to launch her. She moved down her launch ramp 27 feet, but would not budge past that. Two days later, on September 22, 1797, Claghorn tried again. Constitution moved an additional 31 feet down her launch ramp but did not enter the Boston Harbor. One month later, on October 21, 1797, Claghorn tried again and this time Constitution made it into the water.

Yesterday, USS Constitution and her crew got underway for her first cruise into the Boston harbor since 2014 in commemoration of the ship's launching 220 years ago, as well as the United States Navy's 242nd birthday.

Due to her crew's tireless dedication to keeping her protected and preserved, "Old Ironsides" is the last of the six original U.S. Navy frigates still standing and holds the title, Oldest Commissioned Warship Afloat in the World. Happy birthday USS Constitution!!!!
