So excited about this find! Ever since we found out that our property used to be called Sandy Hill Farm, and operated as a dairy for several decades we’ve been trying to find one of these rare milk bottles.

Thanks to Jay of we finally have one!

On July 3, 2025 the Kemp Property nomination to be on the National Register of Historic Places was approved and certified by the National Park Service!

From the 189 page application: Significance in Agriculture and Religion under Criterion A and Architecture under Criterion C.

The primary significance of the property lies in its association with the founding of the United Church of the Brethren in Christ.

Architecturally, it is a significant example of how traditional German building traditions were transformed to meet contemporary English tastes.

Agriculturally, the farmstead displays an array of outbuildings that mark the significant transition from a crop producing economy to a husbandry economy, a phenomenon important in the overall economy of Frederick, MD.

We are excited to share that today, after two years in the making, our application for the National Register of Historic Places has been approved by the Maryland Historic Trust’s Governor’s Consulting Committee!

We couldn’t have done it without the help of so many people who contributed their time and expertise to our 108 page document!

Next stop: The National Park Service! (assuming it’s still there)

And by the way - the outdoor aconite carpet has emerged to let us know that yes indeed - Spring is coming!!

This old stone house has seen ALL 47 of our nation’s presidents. It still stands as a testament to the strength of the American people.

On this day- let us remember the words of the indefatigable Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”

Be the stone. ❤️🤍💙

The theme for this week’s post is the year of . . .

For , it’s the year of getting our ducks in a row 🦆 🦆 🦆 !!!

Restoration/preservation work of multiple abandoned historic structures is a daunting task - especially on the financial end of things. We’ve been working hard for the last two years to position ourselves to be able to access historic preservation financial incentives/opportunities.

We *think* all of our manifestation is going to work and hopefully - we’ll be able to share more about that soon. 🤞🤞🤞🦆🦆🦆

A new year with so many plans and dreams!

I’m showing some Tenant House love because she’s definitely worthy. Built in 1918 - we believe it was constructed by Keefer S. Toms. Tragically, Toms died from influenza at the age of 38 in October of the very same year.

This 7:1 brick structure was white-washed over the years and you can still see it on the walls of the recessed porch. One door opens into the dining room and the other the living room. Like all the structures here at Kemp Farm - it was neglected for decades with failed gutters and trees and vines growing into the foundation.

Our original plan when we bought this property almost 2 years ago was to get this house move-in ready first. What we found was too many big issues to deal with all at once - so we ended up first in the house that's about 150 years older. You know what they say about modern construction! 🤣

Little by little . . .
