Castlewood Canyon State Park

Castlewood Canyon State Park 13 miles of hiking trails, steep canyon walls, big sky views, historic ruins, and wildlife. Casual groups and families enjoy the picnic areas at both entrances.

Visitors of all ages enjoy environmental diversity on several hiking trails ranging from mild to moderate. The trails range from .5 to 4 miles and can be combined for longer journeys. The winding Cherry Creek flowing along the canyon floor provides wonderful rest stops. Pets, on a leash, are welcome on all trails other than in the East Canyon Preservation Area (the portion of the park east of Hig

hway 83). The natural amphitheater and the Bridge Canyon Overlook gazebo perched on the edge of the canyon are unique places for weddings or other outdoor ceremonies. Remnants of geologic and local history combine when the then Castlewood Dam burst in 1933, sending a 15-foot-high wave of water into Denver. Ruins of the original ill-fated dam and a historic homestead still exist for hikers to see.

🌺 Tiny Visitors, Big Personalities! 🌺

Have you noticed our hummingbirds zipping around the flowers near the Visitor Center? These tiny birds may be small, but they’re busy all day long—hovering, darting, and fueling up on nectar.

Take a moment during your visit to slow down and watch them. You might just catch one showing off its aerial acrobatics or staking claim to its favorite flower!

📸 If you snap a photo of one of our feathered speedsters, we’d love to see it. Share your photos with us!

☀️ Busy summer season is here at Castlewood Canyon State Park — and with plenty of rain in the forecast, our trail crew and rangers are continuing to closely monitor trail conditions and visitor safety. 🌧️🥾

When trails are rerouted or closed, there is always a reason. Increased moisture, erosion, unstable terrain, and resource damage can quickly make areas unsafe. This is also why we strongly enforce Leave No Trace principles and ask all visitors to stay on designated trails.

Our Creek Bottom Trail is actively shifting and falling down into the creek bed in some areas. Because of this, staff have had to reroute sections of trail and fence off unstable areas to help protect both visitors and the park’s natural resources.

Pictured above is a massive boulder that recently released from the hillside and fell directly into the creek — a strong reminder that conditions can change quickly, especially after rain and erosion events.

Please use caution while visiting:
• Stay on designated trails
• Respect all closures and reroutes
• Avoid muddy or unstable areas
• Help us protect the park for everyone

Thank you for helping keep Castlewood Canyon State Park safe and beautiful this summer. 🌲

Sunshine is back and we’re excited for a warm weekend here at Castlewood Canyon State Park ☀️

After the recent snowfall, some trails are still holding moisture and muddy conditions remain in areas throughout the park. Our rangers were out yesterday checking trail conditions — pictured here is Creek Bottom Trail.

Please help us protect the trails during spring melt:
🥾 Stay on designated trails
💧 Avoid walking around muddy sections and widening the trail
🗑️ Remember to Leave No Trace and pack out everything you bring in

A little mud now helps keep the trails healthy for the rest of the season. Thanks for helping us care for the park! 🌲

Apparently winter decided to come a little late this year.

Please be aware we received about five inches of heavy wet snow. The trails are currently buried and it is going to take some time for our crews to make sure there are no downed trees on any of trails.

Also, we know it is supposed to be almost 70 by Saturday... but it is going to take some time for all the time for all the trails to dry out. If you were planning a Mother's Day hike with us please be aware that the trails will most likely be extremely muddy in areas.

But on the plus side we got some much needed moisture and for that we are grateful!

Happy National Volunteer Week! 🙌

To all of our incredible volunteers—thank you. Seriously… we couldn’t do this without you.

From helping at the Visitor Center, answering endless questions, supporting programs, keeping things running smoothly, and just being an extra set of hands (and eyes!) around the park—you make a bigger impact than you probably realize.

You help create the experience visitors remember when they come to Castlewood. And you help us take care of this place we all love.

We appreciate your time, your energy, your patience, and your willingness to jump in wherever needed.

So this week (and every week), we’re grateful for YOU. 💚
